Quick Lane Bowl Recap

The 6-6 Boston College Eagles renewed an old rivalry against the 6-6 Maryland Terps in the 2016 Quick Lanes Bowl from Ford Field in Detroit. This is the 12th all-time meeting between the schools.

The Eagles lead the series between these two teams as they headed into the game with an 8-3 record over the Terps. This is the 25th appearance for Boston College in a bowl game and the 15th bowl game in the last 18 years.

For Maryland, this is their 27 all-time bowl appearance and third in their last four years and first under first-year head coach DJ Durkin.

A very light but loud crowd of just over 19,000 took in a shootout of a game dominated early on by Boston College.
Maryland received the ball to start the game and went three and out on their first two possessions of the game. Boston College went three and out on their first possession of the game but on their second possession, they ran three straight plays in the no huddle to get down to the Terps one-yard line. Two plays later on third down, running back Jon Hilliman scored on a one-yard toss as Boston College went up 6-0. The point after was blocked.

Near the end of the first quarter, Boston College started to drive again. To start the second quarter, quarterback Patrick Towles finds a wide open tight end Tommy Sweeney for a touchdown as Boston College goes up 13-0.

On Maryland’s next possession quarterback Perry Hills, who had been pressured early and often, is hit from behind and fumbles the ball. Boston College recovers in Terps territory. Mike Knoll kicked a 22-yard field goal to put the Eagles up 16-0 early in the second quarter.

On Maryland’s next possession, running back Ty Johnson ripped off a 62-yard touchdown run to get Maryland on the board down 16-7.

On the Eagles next possession, they drove down to the Terps 26-yard line where they use a little trickery. On the reverse, wide receiver Jeff Smith threw a 26-yard touchdown pass to quarterback Patrick Towles to put the Eagles up 23-7.

The Terps answered right back on a 30-yard touchdown by running back Ty Johnson. The Terps went for a two-point conversion but it was unsuccessful.

The Eagles struck again right before the half as Patrick Towles hooked up with Micheal Walker for a 48-yard touchdown to put Boston College up 29-13. The extra point was no good.

The third quarter started out with the Eagles recovering a fumble by Terps running back Ty Johnson in the end zone for a Eagles touchdown to put them up 36-13.

On the Terps next possession, Perry Hills threw a 63-yard touchdown to Teldrick Morgan to make it a 36-20 game.

After a Eagles punt, the Terps strike again. This time Perry Hills throws a 52-yard touchdown to Levern Jacobs to pull the Terps to 36-27.

In the fourth quarter, Terps Darnell Savage intercepted Eagles quarterback Patrick Towles to put the Terps into scoring position. After two penalties and a sack, the Terps were out of field goal range until the Eagles were called for a face mask on Terps quarterback Perry Hills putting the Terps back in scoring range. Five plays later, the Terps fumbled on the one-yard line giving the ball back to the Eagles.

The Eagles weren’t able to get out of their own end. Three plays after they recovered a fumble, the Eagles running back Jon Hilliman fumbled to give the Terps the ball back on the seven-yard line. Three plays later, Adam Greene kicked a 23-yard field goal to cut the Eagles lead to six, 36-30.

The Terps got the ball back with 1:46 remaining but couldn’t do anything with it as quarterback Perry Hills was sacked on fourth down sealing the Eagles win over the Terps 36-30.

It was a game of mistakes and a game Boston College coach Steve Addazio probably didn’t expect to win the way they did, but he’ll take it since it was their first bowl win since 2007.
