Matt Moore appears to be headed to the San Francisco Giants. The Giants and Tampa Bay Rays seem to have gotten a deal done at the wire, as the news broke right around 4 pm EST, which the time the MLB trade deadline closed.

The main piece going back to Tampa Bay will be third baseman Matt Duffy, whom the Rays have coveted for a while now. First base prospect Chris Shaw was initially believed to be involved, but he will not be headed to San Francisco according to JP Morosi of MLB.com. Infield prospect Lucius Fox is expected to be included in the deal. Righty, Michael Santos is involved in the trade.

The deal provides the Giants with another piece for their rotation, which they were in need of. He becomes the second lefty starter, with the other being Madison Bumgarner. Moore adds depth to the rotation that also includes Jake Peavy and Jeff Samardzija.

Moore is a former top prospect who burst on to the MLB scene his first fill season in 2012. But he suffered an elbow injury in 2014, which led to Tommy John Surgery. He has not been the same since returning from the surgery, but he is having a decent bounce back year this season. Over 130 innings, he has struck out 109 batters and had an ERA of 4.09. His walks are a bit up this season, and he possesses a WHIP of  1.27.

One positive sign is his fastball velocity appears to be climbing back up, sitting roughly around 93 mph. And at 27 years old, he is just entering his prime years. Add in the fact that he has three years of team control moving forward in the form of club options. So the Giants saw an opportunity to acquire a guy entering his prime who they can use for three more seasons.

The loss of Duffy can be offset by the recent acquisition of Eduardo Nunez, who is having an All-Star type of season. He can slide right into the third base slot, while Duffy likely gets to play every day in Tampa.

The deal has not yet been officially announced do to several factors. Duffy is currently on the DL and Fox recently signed with an international signing bonus. It is also possible money could be involved.
