When John McCain picked his running mate (or more than likely had his running mate picked for him) in the 2008 election, the choice of Sarah Palin came as a shock. One so big that it may very well have been the one biggest thing that cost him the election.

Look, I freely admit that I am not the biggest Sarah Palin—or fan of her clan in general, but I will also readily admit that sometimes we in the media have a tendency to play up the worst part of a person and maybe she is not as dumb as people make her out to be. After all, she was the Governor of Alaska right? It’s not like in this country we would ever elect an ex-wrestler or action movie star as a Governor, right?

There is an old saying that it is better to remain quiet and be thought a fool than to open your mouth and remove all doubt.

Maybe there is a reason these old sayings exist, like because there is a lot of validity behind them. Once again, Palin decided to take the “remove all doubt” route when she came to the defense of former MLB pitcher and current ESPN analyst Curt Schilling.

The story is as follows, Schilling makes no bones about his Republican beliefs and has even gone as far to suggest that it is these beliefs that have kept him out of the Hall of Fame—which is a topic I will leave for another day, he was a very good pitcher, but never a Hall-of-Famer.

Anyway, this staunch Republican—and glorified Tea Party shill—decided it would be a smart move to compare what the Muslims of today are doing with what the Nazi’s did in Germany in the 30’s and 40’s. The tweet he put out had a picture of Adolf Hitler with the following:

It’s said only 5-10% of Muslims are extremists. In 1940, only 7% of Germans were Nazis. How’d that go?

Schilling added the following text: The math is staggering when you get to the true #s

It was with that tweet, which was only up for about 10 minutes, that Schilling got suspended by ESPN. The sports giant said in a statement:

Curt’s tweet was completely unacceptable, and in no way represents our company’s perspective. We made that point very strongly to Curt and have removed him from his current Little League assignment pending further consideration.

Before I get to Mrs.” I can see Russia from my house”, can I say really? That was the extent of the suspension? Removing him from the freaking Little League World Series?

So let me see, he compares the death of 12 million people slaughtered by the Nazis to the extremists and gets a whopping week freaking off!

Had the tweet said: Never vote for a woman, how can you trust anything that bleeds for 3 days and lives … Or if it had said Why doesn’t Mexico have an Olympic team? Because everybody who can run, jump and swim are already in the U.S. … or even What’s the one thing you can’t give an African-American? A job.

Do you think for a second a suspension of a few days would have sufficed? Hell no, people would have called for his head. But since we live in a time where it is almost alright to bash Muslims and apparently evoking the Holocaust to make your point is somewhat acceptable, the Worldwide Leader deems a short vacation for Mr. Schilling to be a worthy punishment. It, like what the network has become, is a total joke.

The ironic part is, and this is where the former VP candidate comes in, she has the audacity to blast ESPN, not for a short suspension, but for the fact he was suspended at all. Let me repeat that, she blasted ESPN for suspending Schilling at all. Has the world gone off the deep end?

What if he had said, you know what you call 1,000 Down Syndrome babies on the bottom of Lake Michigan? A Good Start!!! Would they be, and these are her words here,

ESPN IS A JOURNALISTIC EMBARRASSMENT. ESPN – what happened to you? Your intolerant PC police are running amok and making a joke out of you!”

You see Sarah the idea is, if a subject doesn’t concern you, stay the hell out of it. You know why you’re the punch line to so many jokes? Because you allow yourself to be by butting in where you don’t belong. You had no business in the presidential race, you have no business in politics in general and you sure in the hell do not have a dog in this ESPN battle.

Just because people have the right to free speech, does not mean they need to exercise that right all the time. In other words Mrs. Palin, sometimes it really is ok to just shut the proverbial hell up.

Therein lies the rub people, we cannot pick and choose which people it is alright to offend and which ones should be off-limits. I hate to say it because in life there usually is some grey area, but not here. This is an all or nothing proposition. Either it is open season on bashing everyone, or you bash no one, period.

I have no problem bashing everyone, believe me. To paraphrase the late great George Carlin, the continued pussification of this country is what will eventually be our downfall. But since we live in a world where people are offended too easily, then if you say anything against anyone, you should have to pay the price.

Good and evil are not exclusive to any race, religion or sexual orientation. There are great black homosexual Catholics and there are horrible white straight Christians. No matter what you are on the outside, you can never truly hide what you are on the inside. Beauty is skin deep, but ugly goes right to the bone. Guess who the ugly ones are in this story.

  1. Interesting read. I don’t always agree with your political articles, but you’ve got Sarah pretty well clocked. I liked Sarah at first. I thought she was a bold choice. She was completely inadequate for the job she was chosen, but I don’t hold that against her. I thought she could possibly grow into something better. She had a populist thing going for her. Then she quit her job. I lost any respect I had for her. She showed her true colors as an attention seeker. And consequently, no one on the right has taken her seriously in years. She’s a celebrity. She may as well be a Kardashian as far as I’m concerned. As far as Schilling goes, she must have never heard of Rob Parker or Hank Williams. Compared to them, Schilling got off easy.
