INSCMagazine: Get Social!

If you’re one of the few people who hasn’t seen How I Met Your Mother than Netflix has the show for you. When there’s nothing on tv that catches my interest, it’s one of my favorite shows to watch. No matter how many times I’ve watched it will still make me laugh. Even though I often fall asleep watching it and have seen each episode too many times to count it still catches me off guard.

The show started back in 2005 and last nine seasons before coming to an end. An end that had some fans split down the middle on its reception. The show was successful enough that a spin-off was planned although was later scrapped. While the show was loved by many there are still a few people who just didn’t think it was all that great. So why should it be added to your Netflix rotation?

The Characters:
If the show did anything right it was cast the role of each character perfectly. The audience is immediately drawn in by how they can relate to each friend. The cast of Josh Radnor, Jason Segel, Alyson Hannigan, Cobie Smuthers, and Neil Patrick Harris do an amazing job of creating friends we’ve all had. Each one portrays a character that reminds you of someone in your group of close friends and the way they would act. If not for the believability of the characters the show would never have had the success it did. The show lived off the success of its characters.

The Running Gags:
So many friends of mine have sat down to watch How I Met Your Mother, watched an episode or two and said: “I just couldn’t get into it.” Unfortunately for them, it starts off as a show that is easy to give up on. For those who stick it out, it pays off in the long run. So much of the show’s comedy comes from previous points in the show. At face value, some of the jokes come off as quirky and awkward. Once you get deeper into the shows seasons, what was once awkward makes a lot more sense. The flashbacks and running gags bring out some of the bigger laughs the show has to offer. Watching one or two episodes and giving up does the show no justice.

The Emotional Rollercoaster:
The show starts off as strictly a comedy. However, by the end of it, there are episodes that take the viewer along for the ride. Through so many life events, the viewers can’t help but feel sympathy. The close-knit group of friends are faced with reality and don’t always come out ahead. The show digs into the reality that sometimes the best thing for someone is the company of an understanding friend. Not only will you laugh at the jokes, you’ll also binge to see what happens next.

Admittedly so, I did not watch the show from the beginning. Although I did jump in somewhere in the middle, it was only a matter of time before I was caught up. With the show being over and episodes being 20 minutes you’ll never have to worry about catching up. How I Met Your Mother is the perfect show to watch if you’ve never seen it before and want something new to stream. If you’re not into it right away, give it a fighting chance. Before you know it, you’ll get the long running jokes and be laughing right along. The show might not jump to the top of your favorite sitcoms but for me, it came pretty close. How I Met Your Mother is currently on Netflix running the show in its entirety.
