Welcome to The Inscriber : Digital Magazine’s Saturday daily/weekend news roundup, The Byline Saturday Report, which is a contemplation of news events that are current and relevant.

Short and sweet, The Byline Report will touch upon events with a blurb of facts and information, along with the possibility of an opinion.  Without further ado, here are the news events for Saturday, August 10th, that are making headlines today.

Radio Station Fires Ex-Cards’ Slugger Jack Clark for Albert Pujols/Justin Verlander PED Remarks – In what seems to be a modern-day self-righteous bounty-hunter, do-gooder like crusade to “clean the game” of PED’s, Jack Clark took it upon himself to channel his inner Spanish Inquisition and accuse former Cardinals hero–and current Los Angeles Angels Of Anaheim slugger, Albert Pujols and current Detroit Tigers ace Justin Verlander on the St Louis radio station, WGNU 920, along with his co-host Kevin Slaten.

After the unfortunate remarks, both Clark and Slaten would immediately be relived of their duties by WGNO-920, and after hearing of the accusations, Pujols did the right thing—as well as set an example of how rampant rumors and irresponsible media is allowed to foster—in threatening legal action against Clark.  Verlander’s response was a BIT more softer in calling Clark’s comments moronic.

Obama Cancels On Putin – In what may be a new-era thawing between former Cold War adversaries, U.S. President Barack Obama abruptly cancelled a high-level face-to-face summit meeting with Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin.  Once accused of jilting—and disrespecting–Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu during the 2012 election by Republicans in attack ads, makes you wonder how the GOP will react to Obama leaving Putin at the altar?

Jets QB Geno Smith Tweaks Ankle in NFL Debut – As written by myself last night, the much overly hyped QB competition hit a minor snag Friday night as the 39th overall pick in the 2013 NFL Draft would roll his right ankle on a scramble. Smith would finish by going 6-of-7 for 47 yards.  X-Rays would come back negative for Smith, which is good news if you are one of the many who wish to see starter Mark Sanchez benched, traded or flat-out cut.  I mean, how many more times do you have to see the infamous “Butt Fumble” to try to defend the former USC bust, huh?

News and Notes : “Elysium” Heading For $30 Million Debut, “We’re The Millers” Opens at $26 Million , “The Wolverine Goes Over $100 Million  – Per imdb.com, the new Matt Damon apocalypse thriller is heading toward a strong opening weekend of $30 million.

The new Jennifer Aniston/Jason Sudeikis comedy, “We’re The Millers” finished in second place with $26 million, The newest X-Men spinoff, “The Wolverine” starring Hugh Jackman, added another $21.3 million to it’s box-office total and go over the $100 million dollar mark at $106.5 million according to boxofficemojo.com.

QB’s Weeden, Vick Have Strong Pre-Season Debuts. Both beleaguered and heavily criticized by both fans and media in their own respective cities, Cleveland Browns quarterback Brandon Weeden and Philadelphia Eagles signal-caller Michael Vick looked solid in their debuts in completely new systems.

For Weeden, the 22nd pick in the 2012 pick out of Oklahoma State, completed 10-of-13 passes for 112 yards and throw one touchdown in the Browns 27-19 preseason win over the St Louis Rams.  Weeden would finish the game with a QB rating of 127.7 and look like the poised and confident quarterback that Cleveland selected in new offensive coordinator Norv Turner’s vertical passing attack.

Vick, would struggle at the end of last season in Philadelphia, is now feeling the heat from second-year quarterback Nick Foles in training camp. Vick completed 4-of-5 passes for 94 yards and throw one touchdowns in the Eagles’ 31-22 preseason opener loss to the New England Patriots.

Gunners Linked to Bayern’s Luis Gustavo, Down Man City 3-0 in Friendly – With no signings still and the transfer window closing, Arsenal may be looking at Bayern Brazilian midfielder Luis Guatavo, per David Glenn of the Inscriber, the Gunners are looking to add the talented midfielder after being re-buffed by Liverpool in their pursuit for controversial striker, Luis Suarez.  In terms of the friendly against the Citizens, thanks to goals by Theo Walcott, Aaron Ramsey and Oliver Giroud, Arsenal would secure a 3-0 clean sheet win against the high-powered Stevan Jovetic-led Man City attack.
