It’s good for the soul to have an update on Tim Tebow every now and again. At near 30 years old, the guy may end up playing in the show. The New York Mets may call on Tim Tebow to help try to save their season. Some of you may be laughing. Others know what I’m talking about. The Mets are a dumpster fire. Tebow could, and may very well end up being the answer.

Tim Tebow signed a minor league contract with the New York Mets last September. He began his professional baseball career in the fall instructional league. The worst part about Tebow’s signing was what the Mets front office had to say about it. Mets general manager Sandy Alderson insisted that signing Tebow, a former NFL quarterback, is not a publicity stunt.

“While I and the organization, I think, are mindful of the novel nature of this situation, this decision was strictly driven by baseball,” Alderson said on a conference call with Tebow and agent Brodie Van Wagenen. They announced an agreement that included a $100,000 signing bonus. “This was not something that was driven by marketing considerations or anything of the sort. We are extremely intrigued with the potential that Tim has.” (source)

That has to be a load of garbage. While intrigued by what he could offer, there is no way it was the sole reason they signed him. Call me a conspiracy theorist if you want, but I think the Mets knew. They knew that this season was going to go downhill for them. The organization knew that they would have a large group of upset, unhappy, and fed up fans. What were they going to do about it? Try to sell tickets anyway.

With Tebow hitting .226/.312/.351 in his 49 games so far, it isn’t a stretch to see him make the Major League Baseball roster. Especially if the Mets decide they need a publicity stunt suddenly. The club is 25-32 so far this year. They don’t have a winning record, or even a .500 record, either at home or on the road. Some baseball experts, like myself, would consider the New York Mets to be the MOST disappointing team at this point in the year. Imagine how their fans feel.

Tim Tebow is selling a lot of tickets at the Minor League Baseball level. He is a well-oiled dog and pony show. Maybe the Mets bring that show to Citi Field. It might make them a few extra dollars. They’re going to need it if they want to sign any players that could possibly fix their broken, injured ball club.
