It was reported in the early hours on Tuesday that Conor McGregor will be the main event in the historic UFC 205 card against Eddie Alvarez for the lightweight title. It was also mentioned that if Conor does defeat Eddie Alvarez, he will become the first UFC fighter to hold two titles at the same time in two different weight classes. Unfortunately, Conor will not be holding two titles if he does so happen to win at the event.

While Dana White was on ESPN’s Sportscenter to make the announcement of McGregor and Alvarez will main event the historical UFC card, he put in a stipulation that makes it interesting. He said to the ESPN host that, “He wants to try to gain both belts, and he will give up one of those titles after that fight in New York.” He would also add on when asked about which title would McGregor need to give up and he said, “good question.”

It should be noted that Dana White did not want to put McGregor in the main event of UFC 205. After he defeated Nate Diaz at UFC 200 in July, he ended up injuring his foot. So as Dana was figuring out who would be the main event the historical UFC card, he would end up arguing with Conor. As they were arguing, Conor would end up telling Dana White, “ I know my body better than you do.” Dana White would end up saying that is what it is like to negotiate with a guy like McGregor.

I see it from both sides of the spectrum to them arguing. Dana realizes that this is the biggest event in the history of UFC, and he wants nothing to go wrong. Conor is someone who has been an MMA fighter for years and doesn’t want to be told that he can’t do something. As far as being forced to forfeit one of his titles after UFC 205, I find that interesting, yet not surprising. Conor has the chance to do something that has not been done before. My assumption is Dana is making Conor do this to show that one fighter can’t dominate multiple weight classes in the UFC. However, who knows if that is the actual reason for Dana White to do this.

UFC 205 happens on November 12, 2016; live at Madison Square Garden in New York City. It will be the first UFC event held in New York since the ban was lifted. Over the last few days, other matches have been announced for the card. Some notable names that will be on the card with Conor McGregor are Rashad Evans and Long Island’s own Chris Wiedman.
