It appears that a Red Devil may take the bitter Arsenal-Chelsea rivalry to new heights, thanks the Gunner’s opening salvo for the signature of Wayne Rooney.

According to Kyle Bonn of ProSoccerTalk.com (via Simon Mullock from The Mirror) Arsenal have reportedly offered a bid of $30.4 million for the 27-year-old’s services.

While Arsenal may have made the first move, Chelsea—who is also rumored to fancy the Liverpool native—are rumored to be preparing a counter-proposal higher than Arsenal’s.

Couple that with the Gunners already in final talks in securing the signature of Real Madrid striker Gonzalo Higuain, and Rooney still having two years remaining on his current contract at Old Trafford, worth $380,000 a week, may scare off the traditionally frugal Gunners.

In terms of a possible move to Stamford Bridge, Rooney would go from one English big-money powerhouse to another, whom could easily take on his wages and surround him with more proven players in the form of Oscar, Frank Lampard, Eden Hazard and Fernando Torres than Arsenal, who have yet to find a worthy replacement for the departed Robin van Persie.

But considering the mercurial and impatient manner that Blues owner Roman Abramovich goes thru managers, it may be better that Rooney works out whatever differences he has with new boss David Moyes and stay at United.
