I’ll admit it. Take away my man card. Rip it up and throw it away. I don’t care. My new favorite guilty pleasure show is This Is Us on NBC. Not because of my wife or girlfriend liking it either. I can admit I actually enjoy the show. Midway through the first season, it has done more to connect me with the characters than shows 3-4 seasons out.

From IMDb:
“Follows a unique ensemble, as their paths cross and their life stories intertwine, from sharing the same birthday, to so much more than anyone would expect.”

The main appeal to This Is Us lies mainly in each character to be relatable. Whether its weight loss, race or simply struggling in your career, there’s not a character you don’t feel a bit sorry for. Not only do they take on their own personal struggles but they’re drawn into supporting each other’s struggles. The most impressive part of the show is the writer’s ability to take you from one time in the story to the next without compromising the overall story. They go from a character’s history to their current situation and back flawlessly.

NBC hit a home run with their latest family drama. It’s a show that doesn’t have to be a cheesy sitcom in order for the whole family to enjoy. It may be more adult themed but it takes you back to a time of viewing shows together. It may be geared more towards a female friendly show but it’s not without it’s connection to male viewers. Of course, there’s a ton of sad and sappy moments along the way, but by then it’s too late you’ve already been drawn into the characters.

So much of the show is well written and that’s what has you hooked. Too many shows have the biggest names or the best production quality and fail because of a weak story. If you can’t relate to it or you’re not intrigued by it a show will never get off the ground. This Is Us reminds you to remember who you are, where you came from, and where you want to be. No matter where you are in life, stay true to yourself and find people who matter. The first couple episodes had a bit of cheesy writing to them, but it didn’t take away from the overall quality of the show. Stick it out for the long run and you’ll be pleasantly surprised at how much you love the show This is Us: 4/5
