A few years ago, the thought of Spider-Man joining the Avengers on the big screen was nothing more than a pipe dream. But then Marvel and Sony struck a deal, and the web-slinger was allowed to come home, as the studios agreed to share the rights to the character, meaning all the Spider-Man action we get moving forward will take place within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. So it is not a question of if Spider-Man will become an official Avenger, but rather when.
In the first Spider-Man: Homecoming trailer, which was released a few days ago, Tony Stark, aka Iron Man, was featured heavily. He is set to serve as Peter Parker’s mentor in the film, and it is clear, he does not feel Peter is ready for the big time just yet. Despite calling on Spidey during the big fight scene in Captain America: Civil War, Tony does not want Peter taking on the big bad villains. He tells him to forget “the flying monster guy” (Vulture), and that there are “people who handle this sort of thing”.
Tony knows Peter is just a kid, and he still has a lot to learn. But Peter is chomping at the bit. He does not want to be treated like a child, and like a true high school kid, he is not going to listen. And he is going to get bumped and bruised for doing so. We do not need to see the film to know that.
From the trailer, we also know Peter’s desire to have the Avenger title is quite prominent as well. While in Tony’s car, he wants to know what needs to be done for him to earn that status. Tony gives him the perfect Tony response, leaving the young Peter a bit confused. We also know Tony is going to take Peter to the Avengers headquarters while trying to talk him out of fighting the Vulture. Perhaps this will be a scene where we get a few cameos, perhaps from someone like Vision or Rhodey.

My best guess is Tony brings Peter to the tower to show him the dangers of being an Avenger. They will walk into a room where Rhodey is rehabbing from the horrific injuries he suffered during the events of Captain America: Civil War. This will be his way to try and keep Peter from rushing into becoming an Avenger.
But as I mentioned earlier, we all know eventually Peter will earn that title. The MCU is headed towards a shift, as the original cast of hero is set to be replaced by the newer set of characters. The newer set includes the likes of Doctor Strange, Black Panther, Captain Marvel and of course, Spider-Man. All of those characters are expected to be appearing the in the next two Avengers films, which will be released in 2018 and 2019. So will it be there that Spidey earns the status he so desperately desires? Or is the fact that Iron Man will be suiting up alongside Spider-Man in Homecoming a sign that Tony changes his tune as the film progresses?
Peter has gotten that thrill of fighting alongside some of the Avengers (and against others) already, and now having Iron Man by his side once more will only push him towards his feelings even more. So the only question is will he get the official Avengers title by the end of the film? Or will Tony anoint him that title during Avengers: Infinity War? One way or another, Peter will be an Avenger by the time Spidey’s next solo film rolls around, which has been announced for July 5th, 2019.
