LOUISVILLE – Thanks to a 355-yard, five touchdown performance in a 49-7 rout of Ohio, Teddy Bridgewater stamped his name as a Heisman Trophy contender.

Bridgewater, who helped lead Louisville to a 33-23 upset of No.3 Florida in the Allstate Sugar Bowl, completed 23 out of 28 passes—82.1 percent—for a eye-popping QB rating of 240.4(that is NOT a typo!) against an over-matched Bobcats team.

Clearly, it is not an exact indictment against Bridgewater, but if he hopes to win the Heisman, he will have to put up some Ty Detmer-like gaudy numbers to be ever considered due to Louisville’s soft schedule.

The 6’3, 196-pound Miami, FL native burst onto the national scene in throwing for 3,718 yards and 27 touchdowns, while his 266-yard, two touchdown performance against the Gators put everyone outside of Louisville on notice, Bridgewater will have to pad his stats against a very weak schedule that consists of cupcakes such as Temple and Eastern Kentucky

While games against an SEC team such as Kentucky and conference foes in the newly formed American Athletic Conference such as Rutgers, South Florida, UCF, Connecticut, Houston, Memphis and Cincinnati could present possible road blocks, unless Bridgewater and the Cardinals benefit from some upheaval in the top ten, nothing less than throwing for 400 yards and five to six touchdowns a game will do much to boost Bridgewater’s Heisman campaign and possible NFL draft stock in playing such weak and inferior competition.

It’s not fair to penalize a player due to the level of competition and schedule he must face, but in the case of Bridgewater Heisman’s hopes, that is exactly the issue, unless he gets a couple of lucky proverbial bounces, he looks to be the odd man out now.
