Coming off a 2-14 season the Jacksonville Jaguars have the second pick in the 2013 NFL Draft and with only seven picks it might make sense to trade down to help build the team through the draft.
Here’s a look at the draft if there’s no moves that get made.
First Round No.2: Dion Jordan, OLB, Oregon
An interesting dilemma for the Jaguars is whether to take an offensive linemen to help protect whoever will start at quarterback or to take a pass rusher. With running back Maurice Jones-Drew back and healthy for the franchise, it’s almost certain that a defensive player will get taken.
Jordan who is arguably the best outside linebacker in the draft recorded 44 tackles with 10.5 tackles for loss, five sacks and forced three fumbles in 2012, he was even more impressive in 2011 registering 42 tackles and 13 tackles for a loss, along with 7.5 sacks and forced a fumble. At 6’6″ even if he is unable to get to the quarterback can use his wingspan to knock down passes.
Second Round No.33: Jonathan Banks, CB, Mississippi State
Teams are going after taller cornerbacks and Banks even with a less than stellar combine provides that at 6’2″ and at Mississippi State in 2012 intercepted four passes, broke up seven passes and recorded 63 tackles. The previous season had five interceptions including one returned for a touchdown, was in on eight tackles for loss including three sacks, broke up nine passes and registered 71 tackles.
Third Round No.64: Brennan Williams, OT, North Carolina
His season ended early due to a torn labrum and before the injury showcases his ability to start at the NFL level as a right tackle. He helped open holes for running back Giovani Bernard who rushed for over 1,000 yards.
Fourth Round No.98: Marquise Goodwin, WR, Texas
Though Goodwin only caught 25 passes for 299 yards and three touchdowns he recorded a 4.27 40-yard dash and provides the Jaguars the ability to spread the field and use him out of the backfield as he did carry the ball 14 times for 181 yards and three touchdowns. 14 carries for 181 yards and three touchdowns.
For Goodwin his best year came in 2011 with 33 receptions and 421 yards.
Fifth Round No.135: Matt Scott, QB, Arizona
With a relatively weak class of quarterbacks, if Scott is here and the Jaguars are at least going to make it a competition for the starting role this is an excellent pick. Scott in his only year starting at Arizona thew for 3,620 yards, completed 60.3 percent of his passes, got sacked only 14 times, had a long of 63 and threw 27 touchdowns to 14 interceptions.
He also showed his ability to pull the ball down with 113 carries for 506 yards, a long of 24 and six touchdowns.
Sixth Round No.169: Mike Catapano, DE, Princeton
Put his name out there with his performance in the East-West Shrine Game. For Princeton in 2012 was in on 41 tackles, 15.5 tackles for loss, 12 sacks and recovered three fumbles.
Seventh Round No.208: Kevin Reddick, ILB, North Carolina
His 2012 season started off slowly, yet ended up with 85 tackles, 6.5 sacks, 18.5 tackles for loss, six passes defended and forced two fumbles. In 2010 he recorded 74 tackles, six tackles for loss, a sack, five passes broken up and two interceptions.
