MADRID – After helping lead Team USA to its fifth FIBA gold medal and winning tournament MVP last Sunday, Cleveland Cavaliers point guard, Kyrie Irving has emerged into one of the top point guards in the NBA.
In a 129-92 romp over Serbia, Irving made six of his 3-point attempts and scored 26 points.
The United States sent their B team to play, and they still had extraordinary talent. Just because LeBron James and Kevin Durant weren’t on the team didn’t mean anything as Irving kicked up his game a notch.
The youngest team since the team debuted in 1992, this year’s Team USA squad won 63 straight games, 45 in official FIBA events and 18 in exhibition play.
With their win, this will qualify them to compete in the 2016 Olympics in Brazil. Thanks to Irving’s heroics, he may have solidified himself a spot on the Olympic team as well.
In winning their fifth world title, The Americans are now tied with Yugoslavia for the most all-time.
With Irving’s continued growth at point guard in the NBA, the future of USA basketball is both bright and promising, and shouldn’t shock any one if the United States adds a few more medals with Irving at the helm.
