RECIFE — Despite losing 1-0 to Germany, the United States advanced to the knockout stage thanks to Portugal’s 2-1 win over Ghana.

After coming within a Silvestre Varela header in stoppage time of advancing to the round of 16 Monday, the United States needed either a draw vs Germany or Portugal win over arch-nemesis Ghana due to goal differential. USMNT would lose 1-0 to the three-time World Cup champions courtesy of a Thomas Muller goal at the 55th minute.

Germany dominated their matchup vs the Americans with ease in completing more passes, shots on goal(13-4) and possession(63% to 37%). Despite the domination statically, the Americans were able to keep the prolific and efficient German attack headlined by Mesut Ozil, Lukas Podolski, Bastian Schweinsteiger, Mario Gotze and Sami Khedira mostly at bay.

Despite Thursday’s loss, thank to Ronaldo’s late score down in Brasilla, an American World Cup loss has never been more celebrated than today.
