The San Francisco 49ers elected to make a big splash during the first day of the legal tampering period. It was not a surprise that general manager John Lynch was looking to add to the defensive line.

Yet who was signed was a surprise the contract was likely going to cost too much. Still Lynch found a way signing Philadelphia Eagles defensive tackle Javan Hargrave to four-year $84 million dollar contract with $40 million guaranteed.

Hargave was taken in the third-round by the Pittsburgh Steelers out South Carolina State. In four seasons there he registered 168 tackles including 22 for a loss, 14.5 sacks, 22 quarterback hits, six passes defended, four forced fumbles, four fumble recoveries with one returned for a touchdown.

In March 2020, Hargrave signed with the Eagles.

His first season with Philadelphia was not that impressive and he started only 11 games. The 2021 season he was much better and started 16 games and 2022 for him was a career year. He recorded 60 tackles with 10 tackles for loss, 11 sacks, 16 quarterback hits, two passes defended, two forced fumbles, and a fumble recovery.

Interestingly enough he made the Pro Bowl in 2021 and got snubbed in 2022. Hargrave will now join a starting defensive line of Arik Armstead and Nick Bosa who was the Defensive Players of the Year in 2022.

Also, here is a look at the reaction to the news of Hargrave joining the 49ers and a breakdown of his contract.
