Hunting for a suitable apartment is no small task. It takes a lot of work to decide where you want to live and what amenities you need. Plus, there are other factors to consider too.

At first thought, it might seem overwhelming, but it doesn’t have to be. There are various techniques to make your apartment hunt easier.

When you start your search, put emphasis on what you need the most.

For example, if you’re a student, you may want a place close to your school. If being near a place to go hiking is your thing, look for a complex near your favorite trail.

There are a lot of things to think about during your search. And, all these factors are essential to consider ahead of time.

Here are a few more ideas about what you should look for when looking for a new apartment:

1. Is Location a Big Deal?

The location of the complex will have a big impact on your life. So, it’s important to find a place that suits your lifestyle.

If you’re a student, find out how close the complex is to your college. It may be too far away. If so, rushing to school and being late to class probably won’t be worth it, even if there are some rad amenities.

You’ll need to weigh what’s more important. Is being close to the school or having access to incredible amenities more critical?

There may also be fun restaurants, stores, and other attractions that are appealing to you.

The good news is you can likely find the best of both worlds.

Continue to research various apartment communities to see what you can come up with. Ideally, you’ll be able to live in an apartment that’s located close to school or work and offers the amenities you want.

2. Is There Enough Storage?

Storage might be a big deal to you, depending on how many belongings you have.

Not every apartment is spacious, so ask a lot of questions about the size ahead of time. Or, better yet, tour the apartment to see if there’s enough room to store all your stuff.

If the apartment is small, ask the leasing agent if there’s any additional storage on site. Some landlords offer storage space in the basement.

If the apartment complex doesn’t have enough storage for your needs, you’ll either need to downsize or look elsewhere for one that does.

If you can’t afford a larger apartment, think of other creative ways to store belongings. There’s certainly no shortage of unique storage techniques to help you downsize to a smaller apartment.

3. Are Heat and Air Conditioning Important to You?

Depending on where you live, heat and air conditioning (or both) may be essential. They make life a lot more comfortable.

Before deciding on an apartment, ask if they have A/C and heating.

If they do, find out which rooms have it. Also, find out if air circulates well throughout the apartment.

In some cases, the units may not have A/C or heat. If that’s the case, inquire about whether you can install window units.

Ask the leasing consultant if they know about temperature control. It’d also be a good idea to find out what the average A/C and heating bills are. That way you can plan financially and avoid any surprises down the road.

4. What is Their Pet Policy?

If you have a pet, you should call ahead of time to find out if the apartment complex allows them.

It won’t make sense to visit a complex if you have a furry friend but they don’t allow pets. You’re better off limiting your search to pet-friendly apartments.

If they do allow pets, you should keep your eyes peeled for parks and trails in the neighborhood. After all, your dog would love a nice place to walk. They might like having a deck to relax on, too!

Another thing to ask about is whether they have any size or breed requirements. And, ask if there’s a pet deposit, monthly pet rent, or any other hidden fees.

The last thing you want to do is sign a lease only to find out that you’ll have to pay a pricey pet fee every month!

5. Have You Seen the Apartment Before Signing the Lease?

If you come across an apartment complex you like, find out all you can to determine if it’s a good fit.

Most apartment complex managers are willing to give you a tour of the grounds and show you staged apartment models.

If you decide to move forward and rent a place, be sure to see the actual unit before signing the lease.

By seeing where you’re going to live, you’ll be able to point out any issues that need fixing. You’ll also be able to double-check and make sure that it’s the unit you want!

After signing the lease but before moving in, there will be an initial walkthrough. During that time, you and the leasing consultant can take note of any prior damage.

This process is essential. It will ensure that you don’t lose your security deposit after move out.

But, there may be a few issues that aren’t as clear, such as a door that doesn’t shut properly. That’s why you should see the apartment before signing any binding contracts. You’ll be able to make sure it’s the unit you want and ask about repair work that needs completing.

Hopefully, these tips will guide you through your apartment search.

In order to remember everything, write down a list of essentials to keep on-hand. That way, you can refer to it whenever you’re on a tour or on the phone with a rental agent.

Finding the perfect apartment can be tough, especially if you have a limited budget. So, keep in mind that you may have to be flexible.

If you’re in college, for example, you may not have access to an Olympic-sized swimming pool. But, you should still be able to find a nice place at a price you can afford.

There’s a lot to consider when hunting for an apartment, but that shouldn’t discourage you. Just keep these tips in mind, and you’ll do fine.
