Decorating can be an immensely enjoyable face of your DIY, and can be as fun to do as it is to plan. Planning your home’s decoration can be enjoyable, and doesn’t need to be overly expensive. Here are 7 great ways you can improve the quality of your home decorating.

1 – Keep Wall Colours Natural

Though it may be tempting to slather your walls with your favorite color, you should stick to lighter, more natural colours to ensure your house flows well. You want to make sure that there are no sudden transitions between rooms that can appear jarring, and if you stick to a smooth color scheme, you will have more flexibility when furnishing.

2 – Keep Conversation in Mind

You should design your furniture with conversation in mind. Don’t arrange your sofa away from your chairs so necks have to be strained if you host multiple people for a coffee morning. Instead, opt for a U or H shaped seating area, or try more creative alternatives.

3 – Start at the front

You should try to keep everything as consistent as possible, and this includes your front door. It doesn’t cost much to paint your door with a gloss that brings out any color you want to use to express yourself. If you do this with your front door, you can tastefully dot that color around the rest of your house as part of a theme.

4 – Keep it Bright

A bright room invites happiness and feelings of lightness, so do away with heavy curtains and dull carpets and instead invite the sun into your home with light, elegant window dressings and lots of mirrors. These can make a space feel lighter as they bounce light around, but make sure not to position them such that they bounce light back out the window – make sure you angle them correctly. They can also make a room seem bigger!

5 – Keep it Light

You should install 3 types of lighting in every room. Ambient (which comes from ceiling fixtures typically), functional (which can help you use the room for its purpose – think a lamp in a study or a hanging light over a kitchen island) and decorative (maybe to highlight artwork, or maybe to look good in its own right). Try to have about 42 lumens of light per square foot.

6 – Research your Materials

The difference between using good materials and low-quality materials is massive. You’ll be surprised at how much there is to learn about every little component you utilize. For example, even screws for your wall can have different functions and uses, read this buying guide for more information and find equivalent guides for every aspect of your decoration.

7 – Try to avoid clutter

Clutter can turn a beautiful, elegant space into an uninviting mess. Try to look at your room objectively and decide whether something has functional properties, aesthetic properties or just occupies space with little utility or purpose.

If you follow these tips, you’ll be well on your way to improving your home with methods that you enjoy and at a relatively low price. With a little bit of hard work and planning, you will completely change how you live in and interact with your home!
