The Ellen Show was one of the most viewed television shows. As a result, when Akeem Mair makes a splash with Ellen DeGeneres, everyone is sure he will succeed.

I was taking an acting class when it occurred. My phone was buzzing like crazy every five minutes, I swear. My phone was constantly flooded with texts from friends and family asking me if I had seen The Ellen Show. “Call me!” They were overjoyed to see me on the regularly occurring comedy segment “Speak The Lyrics.” a situational comedy sketch in which one of Ellen’s writers approaches a stranger and starts singing to them.

I swear I was in David Rountree’s class “On Set/Camera,” which dissected how to be authentic with your actions in a scene I was unaware was on television. At first, I was completely unaware that I was being recorded for The Ellen Show. I visited a Barnes and Noble in Burbank a few months ago. I questioned a team member standing outside, “What’s going on?” after noticing a large group of film crew. None of them asserted that they had any knowledge of what was happening. I entered, took out a few books, and was about to leave when I saw a 2PAC record and stopped in the record section. At that point, Lauren showed up.

In the entertaining feature, a few of Ellen DeGeneres’ writers are placed in a public environment with concealed cameras that also capture their interactions with an unwitting stranger. The catch is that the writers can only utilize song lyrics when speaking with a stranger. The funniest part of the episode usually involves how the subject reacts to the illogical remarks made to them. The program staff included lyrics from Taylor Swift’s song “Me!” in their discussion of Akeem Mair.

Coach Mike taught me to be self-assured and to accept everyone’s opinions as long as they are constructive. The next thing I knew, I was signing some paperwork, and Ellen described it as “the best episode she’s ever seen” on television.

Being the seasoned actor, Akeem Mair performed confidently and at ease when engaging the show’s writer in a conversation that made no sense, unlike other strangers seen in previous episodes of the segment who tend to shy away from the situation. Fans of the Ellen DeGeneres Show were delighted by the entire session with Akeem, and to his surprise, the actor quickly became well-known online.

The Akeem Mair piece from the Ellen Show had more than 700,000 views on YouTube and more than 5 million on Instagram. Akeem Mair’s brief appearance on the Ellen DeGeneres Show ended up in the Instagram feed of Sarah Angeli from Commercial Talent Agency, who would later represent him. I had just last week sent her my pictures and resume, so the timing was ideal. So when I entered her office to meet with my agent, she already had my episode playing on her computer. “I just saw this yesterday, and here you are!” she said. We both grinned and chuckled when she played it again. That encounter with God’s blessings written all over it will always be in my memory.

“I learned that life is an unexpected audition, especially in the land of Hollywood,” said Akeem Mair. Always be prepared because you never know when an opportunity will present itself.
