INSCMagazine: Get Social!

Today, I had the pleasure of sitting down with Marx Crazy from a local band turned music sensation “A Punch’s Pilot” for a very fun Q&A session. First off, he was very easy going and easy to talk to, very down to earth and radiating positive energy.

After about an hour or so here is what he had to say, so sit back, relax and get to know Marx Crazy of A Punch’s Pilot with me!

Q: How does it feel to have achieved the dreams and ambitions you’ve had as a young adult?

A: I think it’s a relief mostly, it’s been a long road. To tell you the truth, even though I have surpassed my expectations, it never feels like enough. There is always new ideas, and new music. But to be respected in the music community is a joy beyond words.

Q: How does it feel to be constantly recognized by complete strangers?

A: It feels great to be recognized in public by my fans. Every time it happens it’s a reminder that my message is affecting people. Plus, I love interacting with people. It’s a dream come true!

Q: You have known your bandmates a long time now, how did you get started as a band?

A: It started for me super young but it didn’t get serious for me until 2007. I was in a garage band out of Mogadore (Ohio) called ‘Osirus’ we did a ‘Battle of the Bands at Peabody’s, and I caught the attention of the guys of ‘D-Rail. Although the band name has changed, I developed a chemistry that was irreplaceable with my guys, and I’m still going strong with that same team today, that I was then, more than 10 years later!

Q: Your married now, how did you meet your beautiful wife?

A: I actually met my wife Regina at a show, she tried to give me her number, but I was in a committed long-distance relationship at the time. That relationship ended about a week after that and Regina was there to pick up the pieces. Because I didn’t attempt to cheat on my girlfriend with Regina at that time, I feel like it laid out a solid foundation of trust from the start. Best thing that ever happened to me.

Q: How do you balance being on the road and being a father?

A: Well, especially on the road I miss him terribly, and being with him is the drive that keeps me going. I love him more than anything. I love writing music for him.

Q: How long have you been playing music?

A: I’ve been playing music for 26 years this Christmas. I started on the drums at 8 years old, moved to playing bass guitar at age 11, then guitar at 13 years old. I started singing at age 16, Been doing it all ever since.

Q: What artists do you draw your inspiration from?

A: I would say that I draw inspiration from a lot of artists musically, I really like Breaking Benjamin, Seether, and Korn. But my lyrics are mostly drawn from the hardships that I’ve had to push through. You could almost say that music saved my life. It’s the one thing that can never be taken away from me.

Q: Do you plan to do this for the rest of your life?

A: I absolutely plan to do this my whole life. I’ve already come this far, I couldn’t imagine a life without my music.

Q: Any advice for young aspiring musicians?

A: My advice to young musicians is to never stop learning. Practice every day, make as many connections as possible. Be open-minded to other people’s ideas. You have to ‘want’ it, you will only go as far as your drive will take you. Work hard.

Q: What was your worst experience playing a live show?

A: My worst experience was in Connecticut last year. I just got back on stage after doing an acoustic version of ‘Somewhere’ and my Gibson les Paul custom guitar fell off the rack. It broke at the headstock. I’m pretty sure I cried. It was a gift from my grandfather. My dad eventually bought me a new one a couple months ago but it still hurts. lol.

Q: Who is the best band you have played with and why?

A: The best band I played with Head from Korn in Sandusky Ohio. Playing in front of my favorite musician was surreal. Best night of my life so far!

Q: Why Marx Crazy and not just Mark?

A: The credit for my stage name actually goes to ‘Tackle’ (big al) my drummer lol. When I was new to the music scene in Cleveland, they literally held me down, cut my hair, and listed me as ‘Marx Crazy’ in the CD credits. I guess it just stuck, the more i heard it, the more it grew on me.
