According to media reports, current MLB chief operating officer, Rob Manfred has been named new commissioner.

Manfred spent the last 15 years as MLB’s Executive Vice President of Labor Relations, was named MLB Chief Operating Officer last September.

Before coming to MLB, Manfred worked in the labor section of the Washington D.C,-area law firm, Morgan, Lewis & Bockius, LLP, will be replacing outgoing commissioner, Bud Selig, who has been commissioner since 1992.

During Selig’s tenure, MLB endured the 1994 strike, The Steroid Era, testing for performance-enhancing drugs, the introduction of instant replay and the Mitchell Report, which named prominent stars such as Mark McGwire, Sammy Sosa, Rafael Palmeiro and Alex Rodriguez, is set to retire at the end of the 2014 season.
