August is usually a dead month for any major NBA signings or trades. That’s not the case in Cleveland.

In addition to fine tuning the trade to bring in Minnesota Timberwolves’ forward Kevin Love, LeBron James and company are seeking the services of veteran Shawn Marion.

In 2011, Marion played a key role on the Dallas Mavericks who defeated James and the Miami Heat in the NBA Finals. In five seasons with the Mavs, Marion averaged 11.5 points and 7 rebounds per game.

Last season, he started 76 games and averaged 10.4 points and 6.5 rebounds on the only team that took the reigning NBA champions to seven games this past postseason. He also ranks 17th in all-time steals in league history.

Marion’s best years came with the Phoenix Suns, but is apparently is seeking a second championship.

At 6’7, Marion throughout his career has played both small and power forward effectively. Another experienced veteran would only make the youthful Cavs better. Cleveland has a little more than a million in cap space to sign the four-time All-Star.

Marion has reportedly stated that he has made enough money in his 15 seasons. With Andrew Wiggins being the main piece to likely be moved in the Love deal, Marion would be an ideal back-up for James next season.

The trade with the Timberwolves won’t be official until Aug. 23 and there is no word if Marion will sign before or after the move is complete.
