The Dallas Cowboys are headed towards trouble if Jerry Jones has any say. Jones has said that when Tony Romo returns from injury in Week 8 he will remain the No.1 QB for the Cowboys.

“Tony is our No. 1 quarterback. We’re going to have the luxury of being able to, I think, see them both,” he said. “I don’t want to presume that Dak is going to be necessarily healthy, I don’t want to presume anything like that. But I welcome the opportunity of having Dak playing at this level and Tony back in excellent health. It’s going to be really special for the Cowboys.”

I can understand where Jones is coming from with his statement about his loyalty, but if the main goal of the NFL is to win. How will Jones force the coaching staff to replace a 4-1 starter with a player that has been through too many injuries over the last two years? The Cowboys are leading the NFC East division, the team has a chemistry they haven’t had in years and this is with two rookies at the top two positions, plus there’s no Dez Bryant.

What Prescott has done is amazing but does Jones have a point. Has Romo done enough over his career to warrant this type of respect? Has Prescott done enough over his career to be able to keep the job when Romo comes back? This is not the Tom Brady situation where Brady missed four games due to a suspension. Romo is coming off major surgery and will need time to get in game shape. But how long will that take and how will it affect the team’s chances?

The Cowboys are on a roll with four straight wins, but what happens if they beat the Green Bay Packers at Lambeau Field next week to open the season 5-1? How do you bench a QB who has thrown for 1,400+ yards and no interceptions? Loyalty is a term not often used in sports unless you’re talking about how often it’s never shown. Jones is sticking by his guy Romo and we are giving him a hard time.

But let’s be honest here, Prescott has done enough to keep the job or at least get a shot to fight for the position. But Romo and Jones have a deep connection and history that Prescott cannot contend with. All Prescott can do is continue to win and hope Jones comes to his senses.
