The 2016 World Series ended less than 24 hours ago, and already we have our first real trade of the offseason with the Angels adding outfielder Cameron Maybin from Detroit, according to FOX Sports reporter Ken Rosenthal.

Maybin has a $9 million club option, which Rosenthal and others also say will be picked up by the Angels. In return, right-hander Victor Alcantara will join the Tigers.

A veteran of 10 major league seasons, Maybin hit .315 with 14 doubles, 43 RBIs, and a .801 OPS in season 2016. With the Angels having likely 2016 AL MVP Mike Trout manning center field, Maybin figures to slide over to left while Kole Calhoun plays right field.

LA struggled to fill left field throughout the year, as they mostly used a combination of Rafael Ortega, Daniel Nava, and Jefry Marte, though an additional six players started at least five games in left during the season. They hit a combined .216/.282/.346 and were ranked as the second-worst left field combination in the American League regarding WRC+. As a group, they had just a 7.5 walk percentage, while striking out in nearly 19 per cent of all plate appearances.

Though Maybin did miss the first month and a half of the season with a broken hand, the Angels are hopeful that they’ve solved what’s been a gaping hole on their roster for some years now. Having averaged just $5 million over the past five years, the 29-year-old will enjoy a nice little boost in his earnings next year, though $9 million is certainly not a whole lot to give up for the Angels. Depending on what happens in the first half of the season, LA may even opt to trade Maybin at the deadline.

Victor Alcantara is a young 23-year-old starter who spent 2016 at double-A Arkansas. He went 3-7 with a 4.30 ERA in 111 innings. He figures to spend the majority of next season at double-A once again having struggled a little to make the transition up the ranks. His strikeout rate of 6.4 per nine innings was down on his career average, though Alcantara did allow nearly two hits less per nine innings than his rate a year ago.

According to MLB Pipeline, Alcantara was the Angels 8th-ranked prospect in their system thanks largely to their lack of depth. On the other hand, with Maybin now gone Detroit figure to be on the search for a new center fielder, though they could use the young Jacoby Jones to fill that spot next year.
