May 1st officially marked the beginning of the summer movie season, and the first major title to come running out of the gate was Disney and Marvel’s Avengers: Age of Ultron.

The highly anticipated sequel to 2012’s box office hit, Marvel’s The Avengers, came out looking for a fight against its own predecessor. The Avengers currently holds the record for the highest opening weekend box office earnings, with $207.4 million.

While Age of Ultron gave a valiant effort, it was only able to secure the 2nd spot on the list with box office takings totaling $187.7 million. It may not have helped that its opening weekend was filled with various other distractions that included the NFL Draft, The Kentucky Derby, and the long-awaited showdown between Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao.

However, Age of Ultron’s inability to claim the top grossing weekend spot doesn’t mean it wont be able to surpass the first film’s total box office gross. With no big titles set to provide competition this upcoming weekend, it’s likely to gain a lot ground on The Avengers and possibly others further up the list of highest overall grossing films.

Disney and Marvel currently have a solid foothold on the top three highest grossing debut spots with The Avengers, Avengers: Age of Ultron, and Iron Man 3. With many highly anticipated titles being offered up over the next few years by DC and Warner Bros., Disney and Marvel, and Disney and Lucas Film, records for both weekend and overall grosses are likely to change hands many times.
