Thanks to Iggy Azalea, Ariana Grande and Nicki Manaj, the future of pop music looks to be both bright and promising. Where do they fit in it?
While many have their have their various gripes and beefs with Iggy, Manaj and Grande, all three are at the top of their game in terms of top-ten hits, Grammys and a genre hoping to move out of the shadows of Christina Aguilera and Britney Spears.
To think, not even twenty years ago, you had the much-hyped Christina-Britney rivalry among fans, who’d debate everything from style, voice and music. Throw in Missy Elliott and her impressive rapping skills and the three mentioned female icons could be regarded as the best female triumvirate in modern pop history.
While minor footnotes in the modern-pop era, Mandy Moore and Jessica Simpson, also played a vital role in shaping the genre in its current form today.
Not to say that Iggy, Grande and Manaj are at that level yet, but considering their massive popularity individually amongst fans, their off-stage controversies ranging from sex tapes, leaked nude photos and non-stop drama, and casual fans could be seeing the new generation of pop music evolve right in front of their eyes.
Much can be argued and debated about their personal talent—or lack off—and ability to transcend modern-day hip-hop/pop, but in a self-manufacturing genre of pop idols, heavily synthesized sound and declining sales, today’s pop music lacks that true transcendent media draw.
Fans can—and will—argue over trivial issues such as most copies sold, number of Grammys, VMA’s and Youtube fans to the end of time, but each singer has catchy hits to their names such as “Fancy”, “Anaconda” and “Problem”
While pop already has the likes of Taylor Swift, Shakira, Katy Perry, Pink, Lady Gaga, Beyonce and Rihanna carrying it now, newcomers such as Lorde, Jessie J along with Manaj, Azalea and Grande appear primed to claim their spot along with their fellow contemporaries in shaping its future.
The only question that fans of them will now debate on is what is their exact place is.
