Production on Captain America: Civil War is in full swing and it will mark the first film appearance of Spider-Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. That being said, Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures have been searching for a young actor who will portray Peter Parker/Spider-Man, and need to have him cast and signed before he’s required to be on the set this summer.

According to Latino Review, Sony and Marvel are currently negotiating with Asa Biutterfield (Hugo, Ender’s Game), whom they’ve cast to take on the role of a younger, high school aged Peter Parker. This is information that the folks at Latino Review have been privy to since late last week, but did not divulge until they had confirmation. Yesterday by way of an Instagram post, self proclaimed “fanboy journalist,” Umberto Gonzalez, also broke the news about this casting choice. Granted until a deal is struck and Buttefield signs on the dotted line, nothing is truly official.

Assuming that the deal gets done, Butterfield is a great choice for the role. Sony wants to feature a storyline in their stand alone films that deals with Peter Parker trying to balance his home life and high school, while fighting crime as Spidey.  At 18 years old, Butterfield still has the kind of boyish appearance that will allow him to grow with the role and still be convincing as a high school student.

If all goes well, Spidey fans will see Butterfield’s first turn as the web slinging super hero in Captain America: Civil War on May 6th of 2016. He would then appear in his first of Sony’s new stand alone Spider-Man series when it hits theaters on July 28th of 2017.
