VANCOUVER – Thanks to four goals in 16 minutes—three of them from Carli Lloyd, USWNT rout Japan, 5-2, to claim their third Women’s World Cup title.

The United States outshot Japan, 15-12 and had more corner kicks, 7-3 while Japan dominated possession 52 to 48 percent.

Lloyd, the ringleader in the American blitzkrieg, scored goals in the third, fifth and 16th minute helped galvanize an American side that looked determined to exorcise the demons of 2011.

Lauren Holiday added a goal in the 14th minute, before Japan would tally with a goal from Yuki Ogimi in the 27th minute and an own goal(OG) from Julie Johnston in the 52nd.

Tobin Heath would add the final tally to give the Americans that elusive win over their long-time nemesis from the Land Of The Rising Sun, and the most women soccer titles of all time.

Goalkeeper Hope Solo would be awarded the Golden Glove Award for best goalkeeper in the World Cup, as she allowed one goal during the entire tournament. Lloyd would win the Silver Boot for second-most goals and Golden Ball for best player of the Women’s World Cup.
