INSCMagazine: Get Social!

Fall.

The temperatures are colder, the air a little crisper with a hint of winter, the leaves are changing colors and our bodies suddenly decide to slow down.

Perhaps it is something deep within our cavemen DNA, but when the weather turns colder, we tend to slow down or stop our workouts and training, in hopes of trying to stay warmer, in an effort to brave the cold months. Ironically, this should be the time to increase one’s physical activity, in order to keep their bodies.

Thanks to Instagram, one can look no further than online to get ideas and motivation on how to stay fit, healthy for the colder months. One such Instagram fitness model, that is sure to motivate you is Edmonton-born hottie, Jessica Liu.

The 27-year-old Chinese-Canadian fitness babe has modeled in beauty pageants such as Miss Asia Canada and in magazines such as Miss Jet Set, as she has expanded her modeling portfolio to include glamour and fashion.

Despite being a petite 5’3, Jessica packs a punch as she is a martial arts practitioner, and a lover of hip-hop.

Shapely, alluring and fit, the Magnum Nutraceuticals Athlete and ABBA (Alberta Bodybuilding Association) Bikini Athlete is also a die-hard fan of her hometown Edmonton Oilers and NHL MVP center, Conor McDavid.

Below is my Q and A with Jessica as we talk modeling in Costa Rica over the summer, her Lululemon’s, her on-point nail game and power rings.

What brands have you modeled for? I haven’t modelled for any brands per say, unless it includes sponsored Instagram posts.

Where has been your favorite place to shoot? I loved shooting in Costa Rica because it was so beautiful and warm there. I also enjoy doing indoor shoots as well

Looks like you had a great summer in shooting down in Costa Rica, what else did you do that you’ll remember? This summer has been a whirlwind! I competed in Provincials in June, then flew down to Florida for a networking event and had the chance to stay at the Waldorf in Boca Raton (which was amazing). I also competed in my first ever beauty pageant with Miss Asia Canada.

What is the most exciting aspect of modeling?  Being able to show my own personality through the different shots, and to see the end results of the shoot. The thought of being published and having people see the photos are exciting as well!

Looks like you’re branching off into fashion and glamour, how excited are you to be diversifying yourself as a model? I am very excited to be diversifying myself. I’ve come to realize that as a model, as long as you are able to adapt and understand what “look” you’re trying to aim at, there’s not really a specific or defined category in modelling (like fitness for instance). I mean there are definitely certain looks that need to be obtained for the specific types of modelling, but I mean it’s more of understanding the genre and being able to really transition into a different type of style (almost like acting).

What fashion and style tips and trends do you have for looking good?  I always say wear what you feel confident in. I always like to mix different genres together (like glam with goth, glam with athletic wear, etc). Drink a lot of water and workout! This will help you detoxify and keep your skin glowing.

Athleisure? Fashion or fitness fad?  Fashion! Yes! I love my Lululemons. When it is hot, sometimes I’ll just throw on a printed crop t-shirt with my high-waisted Lululemons, and even an oversized denim jacket when it cools down at night.

What swimwear trends were big this past summer? One-piece (especially the ones with the cut-outs on the side), the mini-tee (off the shoulders), one straps, minimalist bralettes, pastels

What was your go-to swimwear style that you HAD to have.  I loved one pieces with cutouts, or a two piece with high waisted bottoms

Within the industry, who is your modeling inspiration? I really look up to Paige Hathaway, as not only is she beautiful and has crazy muscle definition, but she is very business savvy and have been able to grow her love for fitness into an empire.

What is your workout and fitness secret to staying in shape? There really isn’t any secret, I think it all narrows down to discipline and consistency. You can take all the fat burners or supplements in the world, but if you’re not consistent with your nutrition or training plan, you will find it difficult getting to the fitness level that you want.

With the temperatures dropping, what do you recommend doing to keep yourself in shape? Just continue to workout and treat your body well. I’d recommend to really do research into the supplements you take and also read up on a few biohacks. I swear by Hardmagnum’s supplements as they are pharmaceutical grade and has top notch ingredients. I’m sure the temperature at the gyms stay consistent regardless of the temperature outside!

What is your opinion of the whole “shaming” issue that seems to permiate across social media and how have you handled it, if any haters tried to call you out?  In terms of the ‘shaming’ issue, I assume you are referring to body shaming. Truthfully, it really all depends on how we view certain things and what kind of relationships we have with ourselves. We can choose every beautiful girl on social media and say that their photos causes us to feel shameful of our bodies.

On the other hand, we can look at these photos and think, “Wow, she’s beautiful, good for her” or whatever the case may be. I don’t agree with any posts that explicitly criticize the appearance of others- that is just wrong. I do think that we should focus on bettering ourselves instead of comparing ourselves to others . We are all unique and beautiful in our own way and should spend more time optimizing our own self rather than soaking up in the negativity that is out there. No, fortunately I haven’t dealt with any haters.  In fact, all of my interactions have been positive from social media and everyone has been very supportive and encouraging.

What would you say is your best feature? My smile

Outside of modeling, what are your hobbies? Fitness is a no brainer, I love to travel, food (sushi), makeup artistry, dancing (hip hop), and martial arts. I’ve taken muay thai for a while, and would really like to get into Krav Maga.

Your nail game is on point, any designs you recommend getting?  Thank you! I love marbling, and I actually want to try the designs where it looks like you have blood embedded in the nails- perfect for Halloween 🙂

Must-have accessory for the fall season? I’m still on the lookout for the perfect power ring.

Sports question: Who are your favorite teams and clubs? Well, for hockey it would have to be the Edmonton Oilers.

Photo: Cameron Doane

Your boy Conor McDavid tho….he is a stud, have you had a chance to go to a game? Yes I have!! I’ve gone to my first live playoff game last season when we were in the finals, and it was a lot of fun. Fingers crossed for this season!

What are your favorite cities to travel to? New York, LA, Vancouver.

What advice would you give to women aspiring to get into modeling? I would say make sure you are clear with why you want to get into modeling. What is your purpose or your vision? The industry can be tough, but as long as you know your vision or goal, you will make it to where you need to be. Surround yourself with smart and good people, and do your research!
