BGP Routing and What It Means for China Access
Your Hong Kong VPS traffic reaches mainland China through multi-carrier BGP peering. Understanding how this works helps you set realistic expectations.
Standard International BGP Routing
Your data leaves Hong Kong through one of several carrier networks: PCCW, NTT, Telia, or China Telecom. The BGP protocol selects the best available path based on network conditions at that moment.
China Telecom users typically see the lowest latency because China Telecom peers directly with Hong Kong carriers. China Unicom and China Mobile users may see slightly higher latency due to different peering arrangements.

Hong Kong’s Personal Data (Privacy) Ordinance (PDPO) governs data protection in the SAR. It requires consent for data collection, limits data use to stated purposes, and mandates breach notification.
China’s Personal Information Protection Law (PIPL) may still apply to your business if you collect data from individuals inside mainland China. The legal trigger depends on your business structure, data volume, and whether you “provide products or services” to individuals in China.
