Free agency is just around the corner and for the Houston Texans, it’s time to make a choice as to what positions will be their top priority during free agency. The Texans made it to the divisional round of the playoffs last season before losing to the New England Patriots. They definitely need to make some improvements if they want to take the next step and become super bowl contenders. Houston is currently 23rd in available cap space so that shows that they won’t be able to add to many big name players. The question is which players should they sign that the Texans can actually afford.

  1. Tony Romo: Quarterback – Tony Romo is obviously a quarterback that would have a HUGE impact on improving the Texans passing attack. In 2014 he threw for 3,705 yards, 70% completion, and 34 touchdowns with only 9 interceptions. The weapons he would have around him at receiver and running back would give the veteran a fantastic opportunity to make his first super bowl appearance. His injury history does have many fans questioning if he can stay healthy for an entire season. A player like Romo could really boost their offensive production and take pressure off Houstons outstanding defense. The risk reward gap is large but would be well worth it if he can stay healthy.
  2.  Vladimir Ducasse: Offensive Guard – It isn’t a secret the Houston Texans need to make improvements to their offensive line. Ducasse isn’t the best guard available in free agency but he is definitely a guy that could improve their interior line. Ducasse is a player the Texans could actually afford considering how much money they will have tied up in the quarterback position if they do indeed pick up Tony Romo. He will give them consistency at guard and has good size.
  3. Riley Reiff: Offensive Tackle – The offensive line again is crucial and Reiff is a player who showed consistency in 2016. Houston could get him at an affordable price which makes him a good fit. Many teams are going to be looking at upgrading the offensive line so big name tackles will probably not be an option considering the Houston Texans cap space. Reiff is someone that has proven he is a legitimate pass blocker and would definitely help boost the offense line.[Sean2]
  4. Demarcus Ware: Outside Linebacker – Here is an aging veteran that had some injury problems in 2016. But when healthy, he is outstanding at disrupting the quarterback and creating a consistent pass rush. Houston has had luck in the past with signing veterans like Vince Wilfork and Demarcus Ware still has some gas left in the tank. Ware’s ability to stop the run is often overlooked and the Texans could use a little help there. They could sign him to a short-term contract and really boost an already fantastic defense.
  5. Kevin Zeitler: Offensive Guard – Zeitler is 26 and an all pro guard that the Houston Texans desperately need to consider. He is a player though that will be looking for a big long term contract. That basically means that if Houston decides to sign him, they won’t be able to afford much else outside of maybe one or two more players that aren’t top 25 free agents. That being said, a player with his talent and consistency may very well be worth breaking the bank in order to get him.
