The Hudson Valley Renegades defeated the Staten Island Yankees 3-1 in the first game of a doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon. The Renegades benefited from yet another quality start from Mikey York who threw six scoreless in the seven inning game.

Game two of the series was supposed to take place in Staten Island on Monday night but was postponed due to rain. It was rescheduled as a seven inning first game of Tuesday’s doubleheader. The starters stayed the same as originally scheduled with York taking the mound for the Renegades and Jorge Guzman for the Yankees.

The Yankees came out swinging with a leadoff double by Wilkerman Garcia but York was quickly bailed out by center fielder Carl Chester who gunned Garcia down advancing to third. The Yankees were kept quiet after the first inning, scattering just three more hits before pushing a run across in the seventh.

For Hudson Valley, it was the third inning that put them on top. Matt Eureste worked a leadoff walk, moved to third on double by Vidal Brujan and came home on a wild pitch. Brendan McKay added to the lead with a long homer to right-center.

Jorge Guzman pitched well for the Yankees before imploding in the third. He struck out seven batters, walked two and gave up three runs on four hits. For York, it was his fourth straight scoreless outing and fifth on the season. He lowers his ERA to a league-leading 0.92 and WHIP to 0.85.

York’s performance will likely make him the favorite to start the New York-Penn League All-Star Game. He easily punched his ticket a few starts ago, but tonight’s performance will go a long way in his chances of starting. That game will take place on August 15 at Joseph L. Bruno Stadium in Troy.

The Renegades improve to 19-21 on the season while the Yankees fall to 25-15. The final game of the series was scheduled to start a half hour following game one with Daniel Alvarez and Hector Lopez starting for the Yankees and Renegades respectively.
