INSCMagazine: Get Social!

People have been having children since we evolved from the apes. Somehow, through history, war, famine, pestilence and strife, the human race has survived and even flourished. With a current population of 7.6 billion people, we’re definitely doing something right. That all being said, it can be really easy to get caught up in the “am I a perfect parent?” trap. We’re here to tell you that it’s not about being perfect, it’s about being a parent and doing the best you can with what you have. Let’s unpack this a bit more.

A Word About Prams

The type of pram you have really doesn’t matter all that much. It can be tempting to splash heaps of cash and go for a model with all the bells and whistles, including headlights and a phone charger! But single prams in your budget bracket do just as well as those that cost thousands. At the end of the day, all your pram needs to do is get bub from point A to point B. So, don’t fret about keeping up with the Joneses in the mother’s group.

Breast Fed or Not

There has been some controversy about the best way to feed your child: is breast milk the best option or can formula do the same job? We’re not here to pick sides in this debate, rather we’re here to tell you that the decision is ultimately going to depend on your baby. If they don’t latch properly or can’t get enough sustenance from breast milk, it’s only logical to supplement breast milk with some formula. Don’t fret about it, just ensure that your baby has a full belly and they’ll be right as rain.

You Will Lose Your Temper

Parenting is one of the greatest challenges that you’ll ever face. It’s also the most rewarding thing you can do in your life, career and hobbies aside. Yet from time to time you will find yourself blowing your stack. Of course it’s never alright to strike your children but you’ll end up yelling some, that’s for sure. It’s fine to raise your voice once in a while – after all, no one can maintain a perfect ocean of tranquility around two toddlers who have refused to nap. Just try not to make a habit of it.

Find Some Time for Yourself

It’s really important that you dedicate at least two hours a week purely for yourself. Palm the kids off to your partner and focus on things that rejuvenate and restore your soul. This differs for everybody but it could be reading, writing, painting, sewing, drawing, making music, walking, running, cycling or any number of activities. The point is that you carve out space for yourself so when you are on deck with the kids you’re able to be completely present and give them your full attention, which is what they deserve.

To Sum it All Up

First of all, don’t get caught up in the rat race of having the latest and greatest baby gadgets. A simple pram will get your baby around just as quickly as a top-of-the-line model. Don’t fret about the breastfed vs formula malarkey, just do what’s right for your baby. Know that you will lose your temper from time to time and that’s perfectly okay – as long as you don’t make a habit out of it. And most importantly, find time for yourself to engage in an activity that you enjoy. Do this and you’ll find yourself fully restored and ready for the next big adventure with the kids.
