FX Legion

Fox seems to have found it’s footing with its superhero content. Logan seems to be a smash hit at the box office. Deadpool was the surprise movie of last year. Now they’re even getting it right on the small screen with Legion.

From IMDb via FX Networks:

Legion, based on the Marvel Comics by Chris Claremont and Bill Sienkiewicz, is the story of David Haller (Dan Stevens), a troubled young man who may be more than human.”

Diagnosed as schizophrenic as a child, David has been in and out of psychiatric hospitals for years. Now in his early 20’s and free once again, David loses himself in the rhythm of the structured regimen of daily life: breakfast, lunch, dinner, therapy, medications, sleep. David spends the rest of his time in companionable silence alongside his chatterbox friend Shannon (Aubrey Plaza), a fellow patient whose life-long drug and alcohol addiction has done nothing to quell her boundless optimism that her luck is about to change. The pleasant numbness of David’s routine is completely upended with the arrival of a beautiful and troubled new patient named Syd (Rachel Keller). Inexplicably drawn to one another, David and Syd share a startling encounter, after which David must confront the shocking possibility that the voices he hears and the visions he sees may actually be real.

For those tuning in to see your average cookie cutter superhero show, Legion isn’t for you. It’s not just good guy versus bad guy. The show brings in a psychological thriller tone. Imagine Donnie Darko as a superhero show. It’s littered with mystery and suspense. As each episode goes on, the show gets a little weirder. Never in a bad way. So if you’re looking for the suits and tights down to earth vigilante’s, keep it movin’.

At face value, the show starts off a little strange. However, you’re immediately pulled in with visual effects and intrigue. You might not instantly be hooked on the first episode. At times it can get very weird. However, what’s so investing about the show is the direction doesn’t 100% jump out at you and slap you in the face. Keeping the audience guessing will be the key to Legion’s success. That’s not to say that it needs to be on the level of Lost. If it gives you more questions than answers the show will be dead in the water.

Review: To me, Legion will take viewers in a whole new direction. Shows like Daredevil and Arrow focus on the fighting. The Flash and Supergirl are based on super powers. Legion will be a combo of those but also add in the psychological thriller aspect. That is to say, if they continue down the path they are now. Who knows once the plot takes the turn towards the midseason finale what direction the show will head? For now, however, the show is ranked for me a very respectable 4/5.
