The Eagles have a chance to select the next generation running back Melvin Gordon. Is it time for a fresh, new beginning?
PHILADELPHIA- In a stunning turn of events, the Philadelphia Eagles traded LeSean McCoy to the Buffalo Bills for linebacker Kiko Alonso.
Alonso is known as an emerging stud linebacker but the trade presents some risk to the Eagles since he missed last season with a torn ACL. He recorded 87 tackles, two sacks and four interceptions in 2013.
McCoy rushed for 6,155 yards since 2010 which is the most in the NFL during the four year period. He rushed for 1,319 yards and five touchdowns last season.
The Eagles increased their salary cap space and can now turn their attention to a younger and cheaper running back. It seems almost inevitable that the Eagles will draft Melvin Gordon, the promising draft prospect out of Wisconsin.
While it can be debated whether or not Gordon will be drafted in the first round, Gordon is a possibility for the Eagles. Gordon rushed for 2,587 yards and 29 touchdowns last season for the Badgers.
Gordon may not be able to outrun NFL defenses but his cutback moves and bruising strength will give him an advantage. He is 6′ 11″ and 215 pounds.
Chip Kelly would also like to draft former Oregon quarterback Marcus Mariota which presents a tricky draft situation for Philadelphia. However, selecting Gordon is a logical choice for the Eagles as they are a team that thrives on a strong ground attack. LeSean McCoy was a top 5 running back in the NFL for several seasons as was Brian Westbrook before him.
The Eagles can still retain that identity. While the team likely hopes that Gordon will fall to the second round, it would be wise to consider trading up of other teams are seriously considering taking Gordon in the first round. Gordon is currently ranked as the second best prospect by CBS Sports and NFL.com. Todd Gurley out of Georgia is ranked number one by both sites.
Most teams seem more likely to draft quarterbacks, wide receivers, offensive lineman and various defensive playmakers. The Eagles may be able to wait until the second round to draft Gordon especially given the devalued status of running backs.
The Eagles are unlikely to sign 30-year-old Reggie Bush. DeMarco Murray is expected to remain with the Dallas Cowboys.
