During one of the last missions in Mass Effect 3, a hint may have been provided regarding the next enemy in Mass Effect 4.

Before anyone views this concept as a mere fantasy, it is important to remember that Bioware already employed this strategy with Star Wars: The Old Republic (created by Bioware and Electronic Arts). In the prelude to this game Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 2: The Sith Lords, the main villain, Darth Traya, revealed the future by telling the main protagonist, the Jedi Exile, that the sith lie in wait.

“And because Malachor, like Korriban, lies on the fringes of the ancient Sith Empire, where the true Sith wait for us, in the dark.”

The Sith Empire that Traya spoke became the enemy in The Old Republic.

The Prothean Virtual Intelligence on Thessia reveals striking information about the Reapers

Just as Commander Shepard was looking for the last clue to finish the Crucible, a weapon capable of wiping out the reaper fleet, the virtual intelligence program on Thessia revealed striking information that is likely the best clue as to the new villain in the next Mass Effect game:

“Though I believe the reapers are only servants of the pattern. They are not its master.”

When Shepard asked who the master is, the V.I. responded, “Unknown. Its presence is inferred rather than observed.”

This bit of information is chilling in that it bears that striking similarity to the prophetic vision of Darth Traya in Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 2: The Sith Lords.

Is Bioware doing this again where in this case, the Virtual Intelligence is actually “prophesying” a future war with the masters of the reapers? If the brief history is any indication, the answer is yes.

Isn’t the Citadel V.I. the  master?

In the last part of the game, Shepard encounters another virtual intelligence. This unit reveals that it is controlling the reapers. However, some intelligent being must have created the unit to oversee the cycles of extinction. Therefore, it is logical to assume that a very powerful race lies in wait just like the Sith Empire in Star Wars: The Old Republic.
