INSCMagazine: Get Social!

By Sophorn Chhay

Have you ever noticed how much marketing is like politics? You have your talking points with everyone repeating those same talking points over and over again. To the point where people are so sick of the same old rhetoric that you just start to block it all out. Then you find yourself eagerly seeking out something, anything that’s different. Something that hasn’t been said or done a million times.

Well, marketing is the same way. Each industry has their own talking points and everyone seems to be marketing them the same way. Just as it has been done over and over again for years on end to the point where people begin to just block it all out. In other words, they become “nose blind” to all those same old marketing tactics that have been shoved in their face year after year.

How do you think that affects your marketing strategies and campaigns? Well, it’s not good. No one wants marketing shoved in their face without any regard to them as a person. So don’t let that be you! But that’s easier said than done. I realize you are probably wondering how to proceed, especially if you’ve decided not to use any of the old, tired marketing tactics you’ve used in the past. Well, that’s what I’m going to talk about today. Here are five fresh new mobile marketing tactics that will drive sales.

1. Think, Relate And Create

It’s time to change the way you think. It all starts with looking at marketing differently. Because, as we mentioned above, people want something, anything that’s different as they are sick of the same old types of messages over and over again. You have to get creative and allow your artistic juices to flow. It’s ok to be different, edgy and not follow a formula.

Spend some time studying social media, television commercials and forums.

Your goal is to observe what ads, conversations, feedback and what the general consensus finds interesting and why. What draws people’s attention to those ads and why do they think and feel they way they do about certain ads, topics and commercials, etc. Now you take what your team has observed as being the most successful traits of your study and use those to develop your new marketing campaigns. And that leads us to number two.

2. A Play On Words With A Twist On Reality

Make your audience have to think about your message. This is the best way to get their attention. And they will (hopefully) be rolling on the floor laughing once they “get it.” Some of the most popular ads use a play on words or some sort of twist on reality to build those ads. Something that makes the customer have to think about what you mean, then once their brain relates your message to the actual reality of the situation, it will make them feel good that they “got it” and this is a formula that makes any message memorable. Additionally, this method also helps you break-out of the traditional marketing mold by being different, but only if you are creative enough in your thinking and are properly selecting your subject matter.

3. How To Tie-In Your New Marketing Techniques With Mobile Marketing

Once you have properly identified a refreshing new marketing style and built your new marketing campaigns, you will need to select the best way to deliver your message via a mobile device. Why via mobile devices? Because SMS and MMS marketing are predicted to contribute to a 40% growth rate of revenue by 2017. And who doesn’t want to grow their revenue?

But how do you do that? Well, that leads us to number four.

4. Using Pictures And Videos For Success

SMS and MMS marketing using multimedia such as pictures and video are becoming more and more popular. And to prove it, just think about how quickly cute or funny videos go viral. That’s because it makes people feel good. People love to feel good and will do just about anything to attain that euphoric feeling. So why not give them what they want? You can do that by developing your messages around funny or cute viral videos, pictures or really anything that would make your audience feel good. This will not only make your customers feel good, it will also have them looking forward to and opening all your future messages as well.

5. Get Personal

In the digital world, people expect to be addressed personally. That means gone are the days when you could send out a generic mass message, whether that be through direct mail or a text message. You must address your customers personally, by name. But getting personal goes deeper than just using their name in your messages.

You should only be sending them the content they like and want, which means you should be tracking each visit they make to your website and/or store, as well as tracking what they clicked on or what they purchased while they were there. You will then take that information and create messages based on their likes and wants and you will do this via retargeting.

If you are not using retargeting as part of your marketing strategy, then this is something you seriously need to add to your marketing arsenal.

The Bottom Line

If you do these five things, you will be off to a great start in your efforts to approach mobile marketing in a fresh new way. And if you take these five techniques and build on them with more fresh new ways to deliver exceptional mobile messages to your customers, you will be well on your way to success.
