Asdrubal Cabrera
Chuck Crow – The Plain Dealer

Another trade deadline.  Another player moved.

According to several media reports, the Cleveland Indians have traded shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera and cash to the Washington Nationals. In return, the Indians acquire shortstop Zach Walters. This move comes just a day after the Indians traded starting pitcher, Justin Masterson to the St. Louis Cardinals.

Speculations have been flying throughout the season as to whether or not Cabrera would be traded by the non-waiver trade deadline.  Cabrera, 28, was in the last of his 3-year contract and has had a challenging season in production.  In 97 games this season, his batting average is .246, with 9 home runs, and 40 RBIs. Having a change in scenery, may be just the tool he needs to turn up the production once more.

With the Indians acquiring Zach Walters, they will be receiving a young switch-hitting prospect with potential at the shortstop position.  In 32 games played as a member of the Nationals, Walters, 24, was averaging .205 with 3 home runs, and 5 RBIs. Acquiring Walters, gives the Indians great flexibility to either plug Walters in immediately to the shortstop position or call up Francisco Lindor from AAA Columbus.

Although this trade, was not a “blockbuster” trade, it was a win-win for both teams.  The Indians get a fresh new look at the shortstop position along with a young prospect hungry to make an impact.  The Nationals get  the replacement they need at second base to replace the injured Ryan Zimmerman.
