Last week, I did an article about Aroldis Chapman possibly being on the move from the Bronx. It seems there is a front runner who seems to be trying anything to grab the relieve pitcher.
Bill Ladson, the Nationals writer for MLB.com has been hearing rumblings out of our nation’s capital that Chapman is still the #1 target for the Nationals as the trade deadline is August 1st. The Nats and the Yankees are still talking about pulling a possible deal. However, according to a baseball source who spoke Bill Ladson, Washington is not willing to give up any of their top prospects like Trea Turner, Lucas Giolito, or Reynaldo Lopez for Chapman.
As of right now, it is unknown who the New York Yankees are asking for in return, but they have had scouts looking at the Washington Nationals’ farm system from Class A Hagerstown to Triple- A Syracuse. The source did indicate that the Yankees want established players who can help them right now. One possible name that is being thrown around is Nationals outfielder Michael Taylor. The Yankees have a scout at the Nationals this weekend.
If this trade does happen and the Nationals are able to acquire Chapman, it would mean he would be able to reunite with manager Dusty Baker. The two worked together while they both with the Reds from 2010-2013. Also it should be noted, Chapman would assume the closer role and current Nationals closer Jonathan Papelbon would likely move to the setup position.
It will be interesting to see if the New York Yankees are willing to trade one of their “Big Three” relievers. This is the first time I can remember the Yankees being in control of the free agency market as they hold many of the players who are gaining the most interest.
