Taylor Jungmann has been one of baseball’s best pitchers since his recall from AAA on June 9th. However, very few have seemed to take notice.

A reason for his going under the radar could be that Jungmann plays on the Milwaukee Brewers, a team that has vastly underperformed this season. And despite the team’s struggles, Jungmann has become one of the league’s most promising young pitchers.

Selected with the 12th overall pick of the 2011 MLB Draft, Jungmann was never a top MLB prospect. He didn’t have the elite stuff that many other minor league pitchers had. A contributing factor to this was that baseball wasn’t Jungmann’s only sport. He played college basketball at the University of Texas.

Now, with three full minor league seasons under his belt, Jungmann has taken full advantage of his opportunity in Milwaukee. He currently sits comfortably with a miniscule 2.04 ERA, and has recorded five or more strikeouts in five of his eight starts. What’s most remarkable is his prodigious 5-1 record.

The emergence of Jungmann has been a breath of fresh air for the Brewers, who haven’t had much success with pitching this season. The team doesn’t have one starting pitcher with an ERA below 3.60, which includes supposed ace, Matt Garza, sporting a win loss record of 4-10.

Brewers Manager, Craig Counsell, hasn’t had much to celebrate since he took over as interim manager earlier in the season. Although, he has taken solace with the play of Jungmann.

“I think he’s been really good since he’s been here,” Counsell said. “He just continues to make pitches and he continues to get swings that don’t look like great swings. It’s been great to watch.”
The Brewers aren’t going to be competitive for quite some time.

Taylor Jungmann has proven he can be an integral part of the team rebuild. Does he have your attention now?
