Though wise men at their end know dark is right,
Because their words had forked no lightning they
Do not go gentle into that good night.

The crew of the manned Mars mission, Ares III, are in danger as an intense storm on Mars is threatening their safe return home.  As the crew makes a mad dash to evacuate, astronaut Mark Watney is lost in the chaos and presumed dead.

Despite the beliefs of Watney’s fellow crew members and the mission commander, he does survive the storm and takes shelter in the mission’s artificial habitat. With the knowledge that it will be at least three, maybe even four years before another manned mission can arrive, Watney must come up with an ironclad game-plan in order to survive. Ultimately he realizes he’s “gonna have to science the s#!% out of this.”

Watney not only reestablishes contact with NASA, but begins to grow crops for food. Now that he’s done his part, it’s up to NASA to get cracking on a plan to bring their boy home. In the end, regardless of the outcome, this will be a monumental undertaking to attempt to save the life of one stranded man.

Ridley Scott is at the helm to direct Drew Goddard’s adaptation of Andy Weir’s novel. Matt Damon stars in this film, which features a talent heavy cast that includes Jessica Chastain, Kristen Wiig, Jeff Daniels, Michael Peña, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Kate Mara, Sean Bean, Sebastian Stan, Mackenzie Davis, Donald Glover and Aksel Hennie.

The Martian will chronicle one man’s daunting journey home, when it opens nationwide in theaters October 2nd. It will also try to break October box office records set by seven time Oscar winner, Gravity. Visit FANDANGO for showtimes and to buy tickets.
