The fan base of the New York Mets got an early Christmas present; one they were hoping for since the end of the season.

Multiple sources have confirmed that the Mets and All-Star outfielder Yoenis Cespedes had agreed to a four-year, $110 million deal; a deal that included a full no-trade clause and one that makes Cespedes the highest-paid player in franchise history.

Several teams were reported to being interested in landing Cespedes; the Washington Nationals, San Francisco Giants and the Houston Astros, but in the end, Cespedes’ heart was in New York and he stayed true to his word of wanting to remain in New York long-term and got the deal he wanted.

Last winter, Cespedes signed a three-year, $75 million deal in January after negotiations between him and the Mets dragged on due to the length of the deal; Cespedes wanted five years but got three with an opt-out clause and a chance for him to re-up his deal this winter, and that’s exactly what the Cuban-native did.

Over the last two seasons, Cespedes has clearly been the Mets best player on the field. While the heart of the team is through the starting pitching, he’s the strength and muscle of the Mets lineup and the kind of franchise player they have searched for and hoping for, and now he’ll be in Queens for the next four seasons.

Ultimately, it’s a win-win for everyone; for Cespedes, for the Mets and especially, for the fan base.

For Cespedes, he gets the long-term deal he wanted all along and was hoping for last year. Sure, he might have gotten more elsewhere and maybe have gotten a five-year deal. But would his heart have been there? Would the old Cespedes traits have shown up on the field or in the locker room? Who knows. But this is where Cespedes wanted to be, and not to mention, he’s getting a lot of money to be at the place he wanted to play for all along.

For the Mets, they keep their best player. If Cespedes had left, their backup plan was trying to trade for Detroit Tigers outfielder J.D. Martinez, who is a nice player but isn’t quite the player and slugger Cespedes is. Losing Cespedes would have put a very large hole in the lineup and would have left them with an outfield of Curtis Granderson, Jay Bruce and Juan Lagares, which is a decent outfield, but not as good as one with Cespedes in it. By keeping Cespedes, the lineup stays strong with their cleanup hitter in tact and not worrying about his future.

And for the fan base, the worrying is now over. Cespedes chose to stay in New York and took the best deal for him. The fans can now invest their money in his merchandise and get tickets to see him play every day, and that’s a good thing. The fans have something to look forward to when they arrive at Citi Field; seeing #52 in the outfield and swinging for the fences every night. Cespedes is an electric figure who captivates the fan base and judging by the fan reaction you saw on social media when he re-upped his deal, they are extremely excited to see their superstar player come back for four more seasons.

Given the fact that the Mets have been burned in free agency before; names like Luis Castillo, Oliver Perez, and Jason Bay will make fans cringe; this will make Mets fans celebrate and sleep a little easier heading into the 2017 season. Getting your best player back on a reasonable contract is always a good thing, and Sandy Alderson has shown again why he is a terrific baseball executive.

This is a great deal for everyone involved and one that helps the Mets going forward in their quest to win a championship.
