We are still early in the offseason for baseball, but there happens to be a rumor going around that if it becomes true could change the landscape of the National League East. NJ.com’s Joe Giglio wrote an interesting article about if the New York Mets are not able to re-sign Yoenis Cespedes, they could make a run at Miami Marlins outfielder and the owner of the richest contract, Giancarlo Stanton. However, it could happen if the Mets can pull some strings.

Obviously, if Yoenis Cespedes decides to resign with the New York Mets over the next few weeks, then this whole thing is moot. However, there is that possibility that he doesn’t re-sign and the Mets would want to get someone who can replace him. Now to bring in Stanton, I need first to explain how this rumor even got started.
This rumor began with an article written by Boston Globe’s Nick Cafardo in which he wrote a column of players with large contracts that could have a new home in 2017. When it came to Giancarlo Stanton, Cafardo mentioned how he could see him being dealt to the Mets.
The Marlins don’t want to break up their offense, but with the death of Jose Fernandez. Stanton’s name has popped up more often. He hasn’t lived up to his contract, mostly due to injuries, but he has the talent and the ability to have a huge season. Possible destinations: Braves, Yankees, Mets, Red Sox, Blue Jays, Angels.
Before I even get into talking about the sheer possibility of Giancarlo Stanton possibly playing in Queens next season, I would like to address something else that makes no sense to me at all. In Nick’s article, he mentions that Stanton’s name has come up a lot since his teammate Jose Fernandez was killed in a boating accident. Other than the fact that they may have been friends, I cannot figure out another possible reason why his name would be brought up.
I do not understand from a writer’s perspective why you would bring Jose Fernandez’s name up at all.
Now in regards to this possibility. Personally, if the Mets can pull this off, I give them all the credit in the world. However, the Mets are not known as being big spenders on free agents or even trading for players with such a massive contract.
So, I feel for this to become a reality either the Marlins have to be willing to eat up most of his salary, or if he is traded to New York, then Stanton should expect some cut to his hefty salary for him to stay in New York. This seems very far fetch, but it could happen if the Mets can pull some strings.
