The New York Rangers are in prime position to advance to the Stanley Cup Finals for a second consecutive year. A lot of their success can be credited to Cam Talbot, who has filled in admirably for the injured Henrik Lundqvist.

However, with King Henrik set to return to action the question of what to do with Talbot has become a hot topic amongst the NHL faithful.

Since the injury to Lundqvist, the Rangers have gone 17-3-3, a record which has propelled the team to the best record in the NHL, and a commanding lead in their division. This has been mostly due to Talbot’s inspired play.

The 27-year-old Talbot has been sensational for the Rangers sporting a 2.12 GAA and a .930 save percentage. He has truly played beyond expectations for the team, and now a decision must come from the New York coaching staff.

It’s a pretty obvious solution, Lundqvist will be the starter upon his return. However, Talbot has certainly warranted himself playing time going forward.

Rangers captain Ryan McDonagh believes the play of Talbot is what makes this New York Team so special, as he stated to The New York Post.

“You know you’re going to have periods where guys are out, and while your anxious to get then back, it gives you a great feeling to know you also have guys who are capable of stepping in and getting the job done, the way Cam has.”

Regardless of who starts the majority of games for the Rangers going forward, Talbot has earned himself the opportunity to receive a full workload. This could open the possibility of a trade, as many teams are in the market for a goalie.

However, a trade will have to wait, because this year the team’s main focus is winning the Stanley Cup, no matter who the goalie is.
