CLEVELAND-The Cleveland Browns already look to have one of the league’s top secondary units. Which quarterback wants to throw deep passes against Joe Haden, Donte Whitner, Buster Skrine and Justin Gilbert. Quarterbacks are paid big money to torch every secondary even ones built to shut down the deep passing game.
If these names weren’t enough to give quarterback coaches nightmares, perhaps adding one more big name to this elite unit will make them squirm at night. The Kansas City Chiefs recently released Brandon Flowers. It is no secret that the Browns desire to build a dominant shutdown secondary which was torched in critical moments of many games last year due to a lack of all-around depth, particularly at cornerback. Flowers recorded 17 interceptions in 6 seasons. The Pro-Bowl cornerback would be an excellent veteran fit and a sorely needed presence on the Browns defense.
Skrine is steadily improving but the Browns decided to not take any chances. That was the message they sent to fans and the media when they drafted Gilbert at 8th overall. No one should expect the Browns to pass up on the opportunity to at least have a meeting with Flowers to discuss his future in Cleveland.
Signing Flowers would be a huge boost to the team’s and fan base’s morale if they haven’t had enough already. Such a deal would confirm the Browns commitment to making their first trip to the NFL Playoffs since the 2003 loss in the Wild Card Round against the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Cleveland Browns Head Coach Mike Pettine mentioned that he wants to build a team that closely mirrors the defending Super Bowl Champion Seattle Seahawks. Flowers would make such an impact to a secondary that could probably use another shutdown corner and big playmaker.

Thank you for the input. His productivity may be going down but he can still make big things happen. Even if he just bats down passes left and right, that is WAY better for the Browns than getting torched for every second half of each game. Also, providing more competition for both Buster Skrine and Justin Gilbert will light a fire under them, forcing them to improve very quickly. It’s really a good idea.
