Monday morning the New Orleans Saints signed tight end Ben Watson to a three-year deal. He blocks well and is dangerous in the passing game. Will replace David Thomas as the primary backup for Jimmy Graham.

In 16 games in 2012 with the Cleveland Browns, Watson hauled in 49 passes for 501 yards and three touchdowns. His numbers are likely to dip with a reduced role in the Saints offense, yet provides depth in case of injury. A great pick up by general manager Mickey Loomis.

Even if his role is reduced the combination of  Watson with Graham gives the Saints one of the best 1-2 punches at tight end in the NFL.  The 32-year-old isn’t  the explosive athlete and deep threat in the passing game for quarterback Drew Brees.

He’s better off as a safety net in case Brees is being pressured and a very good blocker. In a two tight-end set match-up problems will get created. The 2013 season will be Watson’s 10th in the NFL and he’s spent his first six years with the New England Patriots and last three with the Browns.

Saints also signed a one-year deal with linebacker Ramon Humber on Monday. Humber has made five starts in 47 career games while tallying of 47 tackles, one sack, one pass defense and one forced fumble. On special teams, Humber has recorded 43 career stops.
