I never gave material selection a second thought until I started using polyester film sheets.
I figured most plastic printing sheets were going to act similarly. As long as it looked clear and thick, I assumed it would hold up just fine.
Boy was I wrong.
Here I was struggling through warped materials, poor printing results, and fragile pieces that would curl up if you looked at them wrong. It was time for a change.
Enter polyester film sheets
I knew I wanted something with great dimensional stability that wouldn’t curl or distort during my printing process.
I immediately noticed a change when I started using polyester film sheets. Here’s what happened.
Why I Started Using Polyester Film Sheets
I do a lot of printing, display and occasional protective overlays as part of my day-to-day job.
I was looking for a material that could handle:
- Heat from the printer
- Flatness
- Clear presentation of images
- Durability over time
A lot of materials I tried would curl up on me or show fuzzy images as they aged. Using polyester film sheets seemed to check most of these boxes.
My Initial Thoughts
The first thing I noticed was just how stable the material felt.
It held its shape and didn’t want to bend. Not only that, but the surface was very smooth. There weren’t any funny textures that could cause issues with printing.
Even the handling of the material was much nicer. Rolls of polyester film sheet didn’t want to roll up on me like other materials.
Applications I Use Polyester Film Sheets For
I use polyester film sheets for a variety of applications:
- Printed overlays
- Backlit graphics
- Protective face seals
- Industrial labeling
- Window graphics
Just about every time I need a reliable sheet material that won’t be damaged easily, I turn to polyester film sheets. They seem to work for so many applications without complaint.
Benefits I’ve Experienced
Stay Flat
You know how some materials just don’t like staying flat?
Polyester film sheets do not have this issue.
Even if you put heat or pressure on them they maintain their shape. This is great for printing because your graphic will never shrink or distort unexpectedly.
Durability
Polyester film sheets feel thicker and more durable than other films I’ve worked with.
If you rip your material or put it in a harsh environment, go with polyester.
It can take a beating and still look good as new.
Transparency Options
Polyester film sheets come in different varieties of clear and frosted looks.
This allows you to use them for displaying pretty graphics or functional needs.
Prints Well
I won’t dive too deep here, but if you get the correct coating on your polyester film sheet it takes ink like a champ.
You’re going to get crisp images every time with very little chance of ghosting or bleeding.
Heat Resistance
This was another huge selling point for me.
Polyester film sheets have a higher tolerance for heat which allows me to expand the ways I can use and manipulate the materials.
Mistakes I Made When Starting
Alright, so I’ll admit it. I didn’t use polyester film sheets correctly the first time around.
Instead of getting a high-quality polyester material, I opted for a cheaper version that “should” work just as well.
It turned out the material couldn’t handle the heat of my printer. Every time I ran a graphic it would warp or shift.
I also didn’t realize my printer didn’t play nice with this material. Together they ruined what could have been a stellar project.
Once I used the correct polyester film sheets and adjusted my printer settings, my problems were solved.
Things to Consider When Purchasing
If you’re in the market for polyester film sheets, here are some things I look for:
- Thickness and stiffness
- Surface coating
- Level of transparency
- Heat resistance
- Batch consistency
These factors will play a huge role based on what you want the final product to look like.
Are Polyester Film Sheets Worth Using?
Yes! I don’t use them for everything I need a sheet material for but I always keep them on hand.
Cost is slightly higher than regular plastic sheets but you get what you pay for. Troubleshooting ruined materials is no fun and you’ll save so much time in the long run by using polyester film sheets.
Polyester film sheets are a fantastic solution if you’re struggling to find a material that just works.
In my opinion, they’re stable, durable and can be used in so many applications. If you’ve had problems with plastics that warp or fade over time, pick up some polyester film sheets.
