Linux has a reputation for being an operating system built primarily for developers, system administrators, and other technical users. Start with the Linux command line

One of the best ways to become comfortable with Linux is to learn a handful of basic terminal commands.

Commands such as cd, ls, pwd, mkdir, and cp cover many of the basic tasks users perform when navigating files and directories. You don’t need to memorize hundreds of commands. Instead, focus on understanding what each command does and when you would use it.

Learn one skill at a time

Linux can seem overwhelming because there are so many concepts to explore. Users can encounter networking, permissions, shell scripting, system services, package management, storage, containers, and countless other topics.

There is no reason to learn everything at once.

A better approach is to pick one practical goal and work toward it. You might start by learning how to navigate the terminal, then move on to installing software, managing users, or setting up a simple web server. Each new skill builds on the previous ones.

Over time, these individual pieces form a much stronger understanding of Linux. The goal isn’t to memorize every command. It’s to understand enough of the system that you can investigate problems, find reliable information, and confidently try new things.
