Last night was the first presidential debate for the 2016 election. This debate was being done at Hofstra University in Hempstead, New York as it saw the first face to face meeting on live TV between Republican nominee Donald Trump and Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton. Overall, I felt that both candidates had their strengthens and weakness, but I think Trump was more exposed tonight than Hillary. There were a lot of people, both insiders, and voters who were viewing this debate as being a possible and very likely determination as to who will win the election in November.

Here are my five takeaways from the first presidential debate:

The American people were the biggest losers tonight

In the early part of the debate when the topic of trade came up, the debate was fine as both Trump and Clinton talked about the issue and didn’t take childish jabs at each other. Then came the next 85 minutes as it was clear that they didn’t stay on topic and would end up making it about them and not about the American people. It was foolish that both Clinton and Trump made it about themselves. I would figure as a candidate you would want to essentially talk to the people who are voting in November.

The Jabs

It was clear as day that Trump and Clinton won’t see eye to eye on many things. But there were countless times when Clinton would be talking and Trump would interrupt her and then take a childish jab at her. If anything, it was getting old real quick.

Very rarely did either candidate stay on topic

Except for the early parts of the debate, neither candidate really stayed on course. Basically, neither candidate showed any organization. I understand that they are meant to not agree, but I thought they were both adults and not big babies.

Trump seemed lost

I know this one will get some heat from Trump supporters, but it’s true. There was a lot of times that Trump almost did not realize what he was doing. He would constantly recant stuff that he said on the record and he changed his wording. An example was when it was brought up about Clinton not looking like a president. He said that he said she didn’t have the stamina and not the looks.

Trump acted like he was being the victim

Before people get their pitchforks out, let me explain. He didn’t like it how Hillary Clinton was putting out bad :30-second ads on him that he claimed were wrong. I am not saying if its right or wrong because my thought on that isn’t the point. All I am saying is Trump, you are vying for the biggest job in America. This is how elections are done that “bad advertisements” will be made about the opponent.

Overall, I felt that this debate really showed the flaws in Trump. He needs to make a rebound at the next debate that is being held in early October. On the other hand, I know people have their opinions on Clinton. I really felt that she came prepared and had some sort of gameplan. Let us know in the comments to who you thought came out the victor in the first presidential debate?
