Everyone dreams of having 20/20 vision, but maintaining it is another matter. As we grow older, we become more prone to developing a variety of eye problems that can visually impair us. But as long as we take good care of our eyes, it’s possible to maintain our perfect vision. All it takes is a few changes to our daily routine and diet.

Not sure how to get started? Here are seven habits that you can adopt to maintain your 20/20 vision:

Get proper sleep

Like the rest of our body, our eyes get tired, too. After all, we use them the entire time we’re awake. Make sure to rest your eyes properly every night to keep them in their best condition all the time.

Eat the right food

Eating food with the right nutrients are important in keeping your eyes healthy. Fill your plates with food such as kale, spinach, and other green, leafy vegetables that are rich in Vitamins A, C, and E, Lycopene, Omega-3, Lutein, and Beta Caroteine. This doesn’t mean that you should ignore other food. Eating a healthy, balanced diet is the key to keeping your eyes and your body healthy.

Stay Hydrated

Just eating right is not enough. You must also drink plenty of water every day. Keeping your body hydrated is the key to preventing dry, irritated eyes.

Keep Your Eyes Clean

Now is the perfect time to ditch the habit of rubbing or touching your eyes. Even if you wash frequently, your hands are still constantly exposed to dirt and bacteria, which can be easily transferred to your eyes. This can cause infection and irritation, and damage your vision.

If you wear makeup, make sure to choose products that won’t irritate your eyes. Avoid eye makeup that have harmful chemicals in their ingredients. Thoroughly clean your face, especially the eye area, before sleeping to avoid bacteria from building up. Clean your tools and brushes regularly.

Wear Proper Safety Gear

Always take your eyes into consideration whenever you’re doing something. Invest in proper gear to protect your eyes in any situation.

Shield your eyes from harmful ultraviolet rays. Wear sunglasses or UV-protected eyeglasses whenever you’re going outdoors during daytime. For extra protection, you can also wear caps, visors, or wide-brimmed hats.

Keep chemicals, dirt, and bacteria away from your eyes whenever you’re going for a swim. Choose goggles that will completely cover your eyes and prevent water from coming in.

Are you into gardening or do-it-yourself projects? Wear safety goggles or glasses to keep dust and dirt particles away from your eyes. This also lessens the possibility of injury, especially if you’re handling potentially dangerous tools and equipment.

Don’t Strain Your Eyes

Stressing your eyes too much can cause eye strain, which in turn may affect your vision in the long run.

Always keep your eyes as comfortable as possible.

If you’re using a computer or a laptop, keep your monitor at arm’s length away from your eyes, and at least twenty degrees below eye level. Make sure that there’s always enough lighting in your room whenever you’re reading or writing. Avoid excessively bright lights, since the glare can stress your eyes.

Talk to Your Doctor

Consult your ophthalmologist regularly. The most important part in maintaining a 20/20 vision is keeping track of your eye health. Having your ophthalmologist conduct eye assessments will help spot any potential problems that might affect your vision in the future. They can help prevent or even cure eye disease before they get worse. Additionally, your ophthalmologist will also give you additional tips in maintaining your perfect vision.

Keep Your Vision Sharp

Having healthy eyes is important if you want perfect vision. Eye care is easy enough as long as you know what to do, since it’s just a matter of adjusting your diet and daily routine. Before you know it, proper eye care becomes a daily habit, and you’ll soon enjoy the benefits of maintaining healthy eyes and a 20/20 vision.
