Okay.  I’ve done a take on teams who I thought would be good and would be an upset pick in the NCAA Football season.

But Utah bit the dust, Baylor lost its starting QB, TCU hit the skids, and just when it seemed like a dark horse that ol’ Snowman picks bites the dust, along comes someone even I didn’t consider.

Don’t even get me started on Memphis.

Now, Baylor is still alive but they barely survived Kansas State and later they have to face an angry set of Horned Frogs and Cowboys if all stays true to form.  But this team was not even in the pre-season “Rankings” and lost their opening game of the season.

Since then, this team has reeled off eight straight wins, averaged 35 points per game, is led by a QB that should…repeat should get some Heisman consideration and an invite to New York, and they just broke two school records in their last game.

The team that ol’ Snowman is describing: They are the North Carolina Tar Heels

Yes – THAT UNC Tar Heels.  Members of the ACC – close to clinching their division and a spot in the ACC Championship Game in Charlotte.

You might be saying, WHAT?  How can you pick them as a dark horse? They are a basketball school.  And you would be right. They are a hoops university.

Until now!

Oh, I didn’t mention the QB that should get an invite to New York by his name – which is Marquise Williams.

“Quise” has come a long way since his freshman year.  And I do mean a LONG way.  From a lot of indecision until now, he has firmly stamped himself in the UNC football record book.  And into UNC Football lore.

But before I get into that, you’re probably asking why am I featuring the Heels as a dark horse for the College Football Playoff.  Well, the reason is simple.  Point back to one game three weeks ago.

It was an ACC contest against the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets in Atlanta.  Georgia Tech was up 21-0 before the Heels could blink. Then “Quise” took matters into his own hands.

Two strikes before the half brings UNC within a touchdown.  GT races back to an 11-point lead midway through the 3rd quarter and it seemed like normalcy was restored.  But the Heels kept coming.

Williams actually had a touchdown catch to give them the lead. Then he scrambled in from 25 yards out on a 4th-and-5 to seal the deal.  With that, the Heels completed their largest comeback for a win in UNC Football history.

Since then, They’ve defeated Virginia and Pittsburgh, and thrashed Wake Forest coming into a huge showdown on Tobacco Road with Duke at Kennan Stadium.

UNC showed up – then showed out!

And Quise was the reason: How about 404 yards passing – In the first half!  UNC turned a 7-3 lead into a 38-10 laugher at the break.

And they weren’t done.  By the time the final gun sounded, and Heels kept the Bell, 66 points, 705 yards of offense, and an 8-game winning streak.

Miami, Virgina Tech, and NC State are all that stand between the Heels and an appearance in the ACC Championship game in Charlotte.

And the next level, should they win that?  Hmmmm…..a New Year’s Eve Party in the CPF?   Maybe?

BUT – you know how ol’ Snowman operates – Let’s take a peek inside the #INSCMag Numbers for the Heels:

Passing Yards – 290.6 – 25th
Rushing Yards – 205.3 – 32nd
Points For – 40.0Tied – -12th
Points Against – 18.6 – 22nd
Assessment: A little pedestrian overall.  BUT, at the same token, you’re looking at a team on an eight game winning streak, putting up numbers in the ACC against some of the best.
And after their 66-31 beat down of their rival Duke, it is very possible that only the #1 Clemson Tigers remain between Tar Heel Nation and an appearance in the New Year’s Eve Party known as the College Football Playoff.
That’s Snowman’s Take!  What’s yours?
